With fishing buddy like Jerry, he caught his limit of trouble

One cold winter day my old pal, Burien builder Dave Stamborsky, and I were searching for a likely place to catch a steelhead. I convinced him we should try the Hamma Hamma on the Olympic Peninsula.

It's a short, narrow little stream that flows out of the mountains and dumps into Hood Canal. I had fished it before, but never in the winter.

Since it was too small to float, we decided to hike it up to the famous Blue Hole, where I had caught summer run fish before.

Tearin' up the town brings DM traffic woes

When I was a young-un and someone said “Let’s go tear up the town,” we hopped aboard one of those new-fangled trackless trolley busses and headed for the Trianon Ballroom for a night of dancin’ and flirtin.’

Today, tearing up the town takes on new meaning just trying to drive in and out of Des Moines and all points south. No matter which road we take from this little city, road constructions signs greet us.

It’s one heck of a mess.

I wonder why people even try, and feel for our small businesses that must be impacted.

DM police dept., guild agree on dismissal of officer

Police Office Barron Baldwin was terminated from his employment with the City of Des Moines on October 31, 2004, for his on-duty conduct involving an informant and untruthful statements made during a subsequent internal investigation. An independent arbitrator, mutually selected by the City of Des Moines and the Des Moines Police Guild, has upheld the termination of former Officer Baldwin.

A statement has been made by the [Seattle] media to the public that the Des Moines Police Department is “torn apart” over this incident. This statement is inaccurate and untrue.

Seahawks still champs

I have been listening to all the news stations and the complaints; how about a little positive look at the accomplishments of the Seahawks.

The Super bowl had two winning teams step out on that field. The Seahawks did not fail, they did not lose, no one left that field a loser. Both teams played well, both teams are top in their conferences.

The Seahawks should be proud for what they accomplished. They brought back the Seattle Pride that has been longing to burst open. The Seahawks brought together, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Canadian neighbors for full blown support.

Letter irks businessman

I haven't been this PO’d at a letter to the editor since Joe Coomer left town. Bob Pierce takes shots at Debra George and puts down Discover Burien in one paragraph, and in the next takes full credit for everything that’s happened in our little town: “There probably would have been nothing started in Burien, if I had not taken the approach of bringing the business community together,” blah blah blah.

We are not worthy, Bob.

Vote yes on school bond

Our Highline community voted YES in 2002 to support schools by passing a Capital Facilities Improvement Bond. That bond completely replaced eight elementary schools (the last two to be completed by September 2007), renovated three schools to be interim schools, and is rebuilding Mt. Rainier High School.

All projects have been completed on time and within budget! The district did what they said they would. The district managed the bond and the matching funds money so well that an additional elementary school will be built.

Bond will increase taxes

Just as certain as winter rain, the Highline School District is running another tax measure, a construction bond on March 14.

The current submittal is the second part of a $300 million bond we rejected a few years ago. Then, voters overwhelmingly rejected the bond on a majority vote. Subsequently the District coerced a lower value bond from us concomitant with a new wintertime election campaign. The bond amounted to about $189 million. Think about this.

BLT donors thanked

This letter is to thank the many wonderful friends and former students who made donations to the Al Reamer Memorial Fund for Burien Little Theatre. This fund is being used to sponsor BLT's next show, the musical comedy Angry Housewives, scheduled four weekends in March.

The account is still open at Sterling Savings Bank in Burien and any additional funds received will help pay production costs.

For any donors who did not receive a personal note from me, please let me know.

Getting sick is costly

As an older senior I have been quite healthy during my life span. However, I recently felt I had symptoms of the flu, a self-diagnosis which took me to the doctor’s office.

After testing, the doctor found I found I had an infection.

The doctor said his prescription would be a little expensive. But it was a sticker shock when the pharmacist handed me the bill. Each pill cost $12.85.
