City: Pave and go

Our story wasn't on the streets for more than a couple of hours when the buzz began. It was our lead story last week about the fact that the city will resurface California Avenue from Admiral to Edmonds.

That was a good thing, people thought, but one wanted to know if the city was reacting to our editorial of a couple weeks earlier that noted the craters of West Seattle were on California Avenue. We wish the editorial did get the paving, but the city has been planning the work for some time.

Low rent housing?

About the new Youngstown Arts Center, I thought the art center was supposed to be for low income artist's. Well, I'm saying that its not. Rents over $500 a month on the living spaces. My granddaughter works everyday she can and she still doesn't make a wage to pay that.

You know they always said to me you should never pay more than one weeks pay on rent. And that was the way it was.

OK, if that isn't going to get your attention, try renting at the "Brandon Court." The lowest payment there is about $495.

Leave Junction alone

Keep California Avenue Pedestrian Friendly.

Seems like every few years the City of Seattle tries to ruin the pedestrian friendly aspect of California Avenue. And they're at it again.

Tim St. Clair's article, "California To Be Repaved," says that the city is considering removing the mid-block pedestrian crosswalks and doing away with the four-way walk. How many times do we have to revisit this and convince the city to leave it as it is?

The blocks between Edmunds and Alaska and between Alaska and Oregon are very long.

Thank you, West Seattle

On Saturday, March 4, Seattle SuperSonics forward Rashard Lewis joined Explorer West Middle School for a food drive to benefit Northwest Harvest. With the help and support from the West Seattle Thriftway, Westwood QFC, Bank of America, and Bird on a Wire Espresso, among others, Explorer West was able to collect enough food and cash to feed 1,250 families.

Thanks so much to the West Seattle Community for your generosity. You really made a difference.

Y's say thanks

On behalf of the Fauntleroy and West Seattle YMCAs, we would like to thank each of the more than 200 volunteers who campaigned tirelessly on behalf of youth and families during our 2006 Partners With Youth Campaign.

This annual fundraising effort supports youth, teen and family programs and provides financial assistance to low-income families, ensuring that everyone is able participate in YMCA programs that build self confidence, teach leadership skills, reinforce positive values and instill an ethic of service.
