Legislative largess means shortfall in school budget

Highline schools Superintendent John Welch admits it looks odd.

But, Welch noted April 5, the generosity of the state Legislature in raising teacher salaries means the Highline district faces a $3.1 million shortfall in its projected 2006-07 budget.

State lawmakers raised salaries for educators by 3.3 percent.

However, the state does not pay wages for 164 certified instructor positions and 382 classified support personnel in Highline, who are paid through special levy funds.

The district will match the state’s salary increase for those pos

Upset students march again

Highline area students protested again on April 7 in opposition to proposed immigration reform before Congress.

This time they took their rally cries to the Department of Homeland Security building located on Tukwila International Boulevard.

About 200 students marched from Angle Lake Park in SeaTac, carrying Mexican flags, chanting rally cries and waving signs as they headed north to denounce House Resolution 4437.

Among its provisions, the resolution, which is now the subject of amendment attempts in the Senate, would make it a felony to be in the country ille

Annexation impact noted

Burien could face a deficit of more than $1 million to build and staff a new fire station if Seattle annexes the North Highline unincorporated area.

Community Development Director Scott Greenberg presented the financial impact to city council members at their April 3 meeting.

Interim City Manager David Cline noted that a key factor in annexation discussions is that the north end of Burien is served by two fire stations.

But, Cline added, if Seattle annexes North Highline, “this would reduce [the stations] to one.”

A vote for DM levy lift

I am a life-long resident of Washington and Des Moines for 10 years. I moved from Federal Way after a home invasion and several car break-ins.

Recently, I have noticed an increase in the type of activity that can lead to crime. And, was accosted in Des Moines Beach Park where I had felt safe to walk.

I feel the Levy Lid Lift is needed and necessary to support our police and give them the tools they need to keep Des Moines a safe community to live.

School critic challenged

I just finished ready Ms. Allen’s shopping list of problems at the new North Hill Elementary School, outlined in a letter in a recent edition of the Times/News. To be frank, I had to read through this letter several times because while it is chalked full of complaints, I didn’t catch a single solution.

As a parent leader and active volunteer at North Hill Elementary School, I have not missed a PTSA meeting of our school’s parent group in over three years. I am sad to say I have not had the pleasure of meeting Ms.
