Nantes Park site of tree planting

French - not hip-hop English - bubbled out of about 50 French exchange students gathered in Nantes Park on Admiral Way.

They'd come from West Seattle High School, University Prep Academy and Bainbridge High School for a tree-planting ceremony to celebrate the high school exchange program. The setting was the pocket park in the 5000 block of Admiral Way, named for the city from which some of the students hail. Nantes and Seattle are sister cities.

Seattle City Councilman Tom Rasmussen welcomed the students to West Seattle and told them he'd been to France many times.

Correction

An article in our Oct. 25 about Flexcar expanding the availability of rental vehicles to White Center contained some outdated information.

Members now use a smart card, called a Flexcard, to open the car door. The reservation information is beamed to the car and only that member can use that vehicle at the specific time.

Swimming - Girls stroke for time

In seeded heats that looked like races but weren't, Metro League girls swam against the clock for times that would qualify them for the following week's district meet. Six girls swam against the stopwatch for West Seattle High School; four girls wore the racing caps of Chief Sealth. The qualifying meet took place at the Helene Madison Pool in north Seattle.

For West Seattle fans, the most exciting non-race was the penultimate heat of the 100-yard backstroke.
