Local tennis professional Steve Walters again offers area tennis lessons at outdoor locations this summer. Walters, certified Pro 1 by the United States Professional Tennis Association since 1986, has coached at some of the world's top tennis resorts and academies in Florida, California, Texas and Canada. Also he traveled on the men's professional tour, including the 1988 U.S. Open, as a traveling coach for world-ranked pros and nationally-ranked juniors.

The City of Federal Way Parks Department closed the West Hylebos Wetlands Park today - for the first time in its history - in order to repair damage from the recent winter storms.
The boardwalk has been damaged by falling and leaning trees, and the suspended broken branches pose a significant threat to park users.
1. Around 10 p.m. on January 9, Federal Way police stopped at white 1989 Dodge for a routine traffic violation near 34600 21st Avenue Southwest. A license check revealed the driver, Richelle Peterson, was driving with a suspended license and had a warrant out of Federal Way. The warrant was confirmed through records. The subject was cited for driving without a valid license and booked on her warrant. Gene's towing impounded the vehicle. Peterson was arrested without incident.

After co-chairing an eight-month-long bipartisan task force to address the ever-growing crime of auto theft, Rep. Skip Priest, R-Federal Way, today announced that he is co-sponsoring the Washington Auto Theft Prevention Authority bill for the 2007 Legislature.
The measure, House Bill 1001, will increase penalties for repeat offenders and allows for inter-county tracking and apprehension of car thieves who travel from county to county knowing that prosecutors cannot follow their crime trail outside their jurisdiction.

After the power went out following the December 15th windstorm, I used my gas-powered generator keep my refrigerators and furnace running.
The power came back on four and half days later, so we were luckier than some, but in the process I ran through a few containers of gasoline.
Because another wind event was forecast, I figured it would be prudent to top off my gas cans in case the power goes out again.
At the gas station, I filled my four, five gallon plastic containers, along with a single, one gallon jug and was surprised to see the gas meter stop at 22.1
Betty Jane Markwith died peacefully on Jan. 3, 2007, surrounded by her loved ones. Betty was born in Martinez, California in 1919 and moved to the Federal Way area with her family in the mid 1960's. Her accomplishments include singing and directing church choirs, retiring as a bus driver of the Federal Way School district, and her joy of painting. Grateful for having shared Betty's life are her children, Jennifer White and her husband Randy, Jeff Markwith and his wife Karen, 6 Grandchildren, 1 Great granddaughter, and many dear friends.
Marion D. Gates, 87, died January 8, 2007, in Des Moines, WA. She was born on June 24, 1919, in Kansas City, MO. The first half of Marion's life was difficult and painful, but the second half was her life's dream. In 1960 her life changed dramatically. She took a job as a sales clerk at the May Company department store and quickly worked her way up to assistant manager. She stayed there until she retired 25 years later. In 1961 she went to a square dance class and met Jack. On July 11, 1964, they were married and had a square dance reception.
