Wife sees man shot, killed

outside Tukwila residence

A Tukwila man was shot to death Jan. 8 in the parking outside his apartment complex.

Hong Nguyen, 36, and his wife had just arrived home when the suspect who shot Nguyen confronted them in the parking lot in the 3400 block of South 144th Street.

His wife was not hurt.

The suspect fled the area on foot.

Tukwila police do not believe the shooting was a random incident.

X-ray, fluoroscopy equipment updated at medical center

New radiography (x-ray) and fluoroscopy equipment that produces real-time digital fluoroscopy for contrast studies is now in use at Southwest Medical Imaging on Highline Medical Center's main campus in Burien.

Fluoroscopy studies include arthrograms (joint images), barium swallows, upper gastro-intestinal (GI) images, small bowel series and barium enemas for colon studies.

A key feature of the new equipment is its rapid sequence digital acquisition, or filming speed, of 7.5 images per second, compared with four frames per second previously.

False alarm dispatches reduced in Des Moines

Police in Des Moines received criticism when they convinced the city council to adopt an ordinance that limits their response to local burglar alarms.

But new data shows the changes have greatly reduced false dispatches and, as a result, police resources have been re-allocated to address other community issues.

The changes, supported by the Security Industry Alarm Coalition, began to take effect in mid-2005.

Nursing-home generators deemed not adequate

Burien council members began the new year by focusing on the city's response to last month's major windstorm that left most Highline residents without power for days.

Lawmakers, who heard from Burien/Normandy Park Fire Chief Mike Mars and Burien Police Chief Scott Kimerer, indicated this was the first of several discussions about the local emergency response to natural disasters.

Six-month closure

The Saltwater Park Bridge on Marine View Drive in Des Moines is expected to be closed for six months. During the big December windstorm, a tree fell onto the south approach retaining wall causing significant damage. Traffic is being detoured around the bridge. Temporary repair costs may be up to $500,000.

Demolition, marketing set for Town Square

Demolition of the Gottschalks building to clear the way for development of the first of three residential buildings at Burien's Town Square is expected to begin in late February.

Preparations for marketing Town Square condominiums, including a full-sized one-bedroom model unit, will get underway shortly after demolition, Denna Cline and Beau Fong of Nyhus Communications told the Times/News last week.
