Keep school district from restricting "An Inconvenient Truth"

To the Editor:

The Board of Education Directors at Federal Way Public Schools has restricted showings of Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth," the premiere factual film on global warming, and one that will probably be nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary.

In the film, Gore presents scientists' findings on the catastrophic dangers of climate change.

Can we curb the graffiti please?

To the Editor:

Is it possible to do some stories on the exploding graffiti in Federal Way? I am sure I am not the only one who has noticed the increase in Federal Way.

It is very upsetting to see every fence, and every side of the local businesses covered with this garbage.

The Federal Way police have to know who is responsible for this tagging as these kids leave their calling card everywhere.

Rush Hour

The Federal Way Transit Center has become a hub of activity in the heart of the community. Buses, passenger vehicles and pedestrians milled around the downtown site last Thursday during the 5 p.m. commute. The city hopes to build a series of multi-use retail and residential structures adjacent to the Transit Center. Photo by Seth Bynum

Board silences global warming film, for now

In a swift 3-0 vote at its January 9 meeting, the Federal Way School Board ignited a fire among students and parents.

After a short debate with little initial public comment, the board effectively placed a moratorium on the highly-acclaimed film on global warming by former Vice President Al Gore, "An Inconvenient Truth."

The film - considered too controversial by the conservative board and a handful of parents who questioned the movie's place in Federal Way classrooms - can no longer be shown in district schools without an accompanying opposing viewpoint.

Are you ready?

I don't like to be the boy who cried wolf, but it seems that at least once a year I am reminded of how important emergency preparedness is.

Not so much from the unusual weather, but most often in the form of a visit to some loved one's home, where the disaster plans look like disasters themselves. Take my brother, (please!)

When the power went out a couple of weeks ago, I dropped by his place in West Campus to see how he was getting along.

When I pulled into his driveway, he was fiddling around under the hood of his truck.

He looked exasperated.
