Bergen Place gets $4,375 grant

The city has announced a matching fund grant of $4,375 for Bergen Place Park Enhancement to go along with a pledge by Friends of Bergen Place Organization of $7,588.

This project proposes installation of six 25-foot flagpoles to display the nation's flag and the flags of the five Nordic countries and a natural stone marker on which to engrave the park name.

This is a belated book review of a book that is not really a book. For some months the 39 spiral-bound pages of "the Scottish Buddhist Cookbook" have moved around my house. It's almost as though I needed time between meeting the author and opening his photocopied pages before I could separate the two from each other so as to be able to review the work and not the man.

Ballard may be moved back to Metro League

Now that Seattle School District principals are considering a move back to the Metro League, most Ballard coaches say the KingCo Conference offers better competition but the travel times are too long.

Ballard, Roosevelt, Garfield and Franklin could return to the Metro League in the fall of 2008 if the Seattle School District's high school principals vote for the change later this year.

Seattle principals have met several times this year to vote on the issue, but have not been able to reach a decision.

Discover Financial Services is proud to announce that Seri Hyun, a Federal Way, WA high school student is one of 300 state winners of a 2007 Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship and will receive a $2,500 award.

State winners are selected from all applicants based on overall excellence in the areas of leadership and community service while successfully overcoming a hardship or challenge.

Three Federal Way area students have been recognized as Comcast Leaders and Achievers(tm) with a $1,000 grant from The Comcast Foundation for outstanding commitment to community service and academic accomplishments.

Iconic Puget Sound steamer set for encore voyage

On Sunday, August 19, the Steamer Virginia V will revisit her historic central Puget Sound routes by cruising around Vashon and Maury Island.

The National Historic Landmark vessel will steam past wharves and waterfront communities where she formerly called for passengers, freight and mail.

Get an up-close view of the Point Robinson Lighthouse, the 19th century community of Chautauqua, and other historic sites on board the last of the Mosquito Fleet steamers.

Similar steam-powered boats used to stop at Three Tree Point, Redondo and other South Sound communities.
