Schools hire new financial, operations officer

Seattle Public Schools have hired Don Kennedy as the district's new chief financial and operations officer.

In the newly configured position, Kennedy assumes the responsibilities of former Chief Operations Officer Mark Green and former Chief Financial Officer Art Jarvis. In this role, he has leadership responsibility for the school district's business functions of Capital Projects Program, Enrollment, Facility Services, Finance, Information Technology, Planning, Procurement, and School Support Services, among other district operations.

Construction crew breaks

unreported natural gas line

November 27-A natural gas main was broken at a construction project shortly before 10:30 a.m.

A work crew for Southwest Suburban Sewer District severed the main at Marine View Drive Southwest and Southwest 164th Street, which had not been reported earlier following a "line locate" request.

No evacuation was needed, no one was injured, and the line was repaired and reopened.

Give through holiday express

The Holiday Express program at Ruth Dykeman Children's Center offers individuals and businesses a way to give back to their community this holiday season.

Adopt-A-Family-You decide how large a family you can manage. Holiday Express provides all the important information (ages, genders, clothing sizes and gift suggestions). You do the shopping and also provide a minimum $50 grocery gift card or certificate for a holiday meal.

Susan Alotrico, vice-president of Community Resources, said, "There is a waiting list of families wanting to be adopted this holiday season.

Gift certificates are gathered by Burien Police Department

The Burien Police Department is accepting donations of gift certificates for needy families in the city this Christmas.

Community Service Officer Nicki Maraulja said they need gift cards or certificates in $20 increments to Albertson's, Fred Meyer and Safeway.

"We already have a list of at least 100 families we want to provide for," Maraulja said.

"Instead of gathering toys and food, the gift cards and certificates will enable these families to do that."

Donations of gift cards and certificates may be taken to Burien City Hall, 15811 Ambaum Blvd

Final election results reveal no surprises

The battle in Burien between city Councilman Gordon Shaw and ex-Councilman Stephen Lamphear wasn't even close.

In the final certified returns, King County Elections reported Shaw received 4,203 votes (61.38 percent) while Lamphear garnered 2,605 votes (38.04 percent).

In the other contested Burien council race, Kathy Keene (3,736 votes, 57.47 percent) beat Ed Dacy (2,737, 42.10 percent.)

Doug Osterman with 1,642 votes (65.13 percent) ousted Councilman Stuart Creighton (869 votes, 34.47 percent) in Normandy Park.
