Lancer softball team remains undefeated

Gerardo Bolong

KENT - Warming to the opportunities presented during supremely stern situations empowered the John F. Kennedy Catholic High School fastpitch softball team to surface as the No. 1 seed to the 3A West Central/Southwest Bi-district tournament after completion of the 2008 3A South Puget Sound League/Seamount League sub-district tournament on Saturday, May 10, at the Service Club Ball Fields.

"Our girls haven't been challenged too much in league," related Lancer head coach Dino Josie about his unbeaten (19-0) defending state champions.

Mount Rainier's bats go silent in tournament

KENT - It was the devastatingly, deafening silence of the bats that dominated the scene and doomed Mount Rainier's ascent at the Class 3A South Puget Sound League/Seamount League sub-district fastpitch softball tournament on Saturday, May 10.

With their hitting power muted for only four hits at the Service Club Ballfields, the Rams (14-7) could muster only an unearned run in a seven inning 5-1 loss at the hands of Lindbergh to settle for the No. 7 seed to the West Central League tournament at Spanaway's Sprinker Recreation Center and an opening day duel against Kelso, the No.

Highline ousted

The state Class 3A boys soccer tournament opener between Highline and Hudson's Bay was heavy on the red and yellow, and even had some black and blue.

But the worst thing for Highline when all was said and done is the fact that everything was said and done for the season because of a 2-1 loss.

The Tuesday, May 13 match at Highline Stadium featured two red card ejections and six yellow card cautions from the referee.

Hoff off base blaming volunteers

Charlie Hoff blames people, but does not provide identification of root causes. Root causes of negative effects must be identified before solutions are developed.

Mr. Hoff blames the volunteers who provide scholarships, tutoring, school supplies, clothes, food and presents to children and their families, and much more. Unlike him, we show up at graduations to support those who have achieved results. Too bad Mr. Hoff refused to do so when he was a school board member.

I question if knows who really are the customers of the school system.

Why are our schools failing our children: Part 14

SD? SBE? OSPI?

What are these? How do they affect children's education?

These "institutions," all funded by your tax dollars are supposed to have a positive effect upon our children's education.

Let's start with the ESD (Educational Service District)

This unit has a board that is "elected" by your local school board members. It used to be in the Burien Shopping Center but is now housed in some pretty expensive digs in Renton.

I doubt that any of the board members can remember who they are.

Dieting in America

I was hungry.

I had a meeting at 12:30, and not wanting to go there with sunken cheeks and a too-tight belt, I pulled into Blimpee's for a quick bite.

Inside, I cruised the brightly lit menu overhead.

It's gotten to the point in this country that you cannot find a fast food outlet that doesn't offer some sort of reduced-calorie, low-carbohydrate meal.

Not that I'm upset about this.
