Many ways to help sports

I have read the article in the Highline Times and would like to reflect my opinions on what will help sports succeed in our schools.

There are several ways to increase sports in our schools, but it will take the effort of the parents, community, teachers, principals and all athletic directors.

First we need an increased awareness of the major sports that are played at varsity level in the elementary schools. P. E. teachers need to teach the basic knowledge of football, soccer, tennis, baseball and volleyball.

Parking problems

We were about to enjoy a Mother's Day Brunch at the Des Moines Creek Restaurant when someone came in and announced, "If you are parked down below, they are towing the cars away."

We had parked there, as the upper level was full.

This area is owned by another restaurant. We had parked in the middle of the lot along with a few other cars. It was 10:15 a.m. and the lot was empty, aside from those who were attending the brunch.

My husband went out to see what was happening and fortunately he got there before our car was towed out of the lot.

Titillating TV offends

Are you as upset?

Showing a woman's crotch on ABC-TV twice during the movie "Chronicles of Narnia" appears to be a deliberate attempt at titillating millions of kids watching Sunday night, 05/04/08 from 8 to 10:30 PM PDT, on KOMO-TV.

How could this have happened? The incident aired in the ABC-TV promo, "Dancing with the Stars", that showed various couples dancing to promote this popular program.

The TV producer, who left a :03 shot of a woman's crotch at the end, is probably laughing all the way to the bank.

Montessori students help nearby Burien family

When the students at Three Tree Montessori School in Burien saw the smoke billow in the sky, they knew they had to do something.

From the playground, they saw the medic vans, fire trucks and blocked road. March 5 will forever be etched in their minds.

The students would soon learn that the nearby charred house behind Sylvester Middle School was home to Deanna and Hal Buckley and their children.

Deanna was a familiar face at the school.

In addition, positions for a high school principal and assistant principal will be eliminated.

The position of transition principal at Evergreen High in North Highline was designed as a one-year assignment to help in the change to three small learning communities on the Evergreen campus.

Decision time for annexation

Following a discussion at their May 12 study session, Burien council members appeared poised to approve on May 19 a plan that would annex the southern portion of North Highline.

A majority of voters in the affected North Highline area would have to agree to be annexed--possibly in a February election. An advisory vote by Burien residents is not required.

The May 19 meeting occurred after the Times/News news deadline.

ReMax Team One gears up

Last year, when Leslie Newman and Lisa Jo Chard planned their new real estate brokerage, ReMax Team One, they knew the market was down, they knew houses weren't selling.

Bad news didn't deter these ladies. Newman, with 21 years in the game, has seen the cycles. Chard, previously worked retail for Nordstrom's before running several espresso stands and ultimately obtaining her realty license.

Together they are Team One.

The office opened in March of this year and the sign went up in late April.
