Sally Nelson Named to Top NLC Leadership Post

Councilmember Sally Nelson was appointed to chair the 2009 Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Advocacy Committee of the National League of Cities (NLC). Councilmember Nelson?s appointment was announced today by NLC President Kathleen M. Novak, Mayor, Northglenn, Colo. The committee is one of NLC's seven standing committees that develop policy positions and advocate on behalf of municipal governments.

"The year ahead will be critical for the future of this country ? and for our cities and towns," said Novak.

"Although virtually all mothers and fathers are concerned about the challenges of raising their kids in today's world, many fail to take essential actions to prevent their kids from smoking, drinking or using drugs," according to a report from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA).

Using data from a telephone survey of teens and parents, the organization defines "problem parents" as those who fail to 1) monitor their children's school night activities; 2) safeguard prescription drugs in the home; 3) address the problem of drugs in schools

View from the Saddle: I'm all for nudity, sometimes

What, no riding bicycles in the nude? What's next on the city's agenda, no screaming fire in crowded theaters or no spray painting racial or religious epithets on your neighbor's garage? Oh yeah, these are already illegal and not protected speech. So I guess I'll have to stick with issue at hand.

On the face - or cheek - of it the issue of making illegal nude riding of bicycles seems a no brainer.
