Rental car facility postponed

The Port of Seattle Commission voted last week to temporarily suspend construction on the $400 million consolidated rental car facility.

The ongoing downturn in the credit market means the agency cannot sell the taxable, long-term bonds needed to finance the project, according to officials.

For Highline residents, the biggest impact of the construction would have been increased traffic construction around the site at South 160th Street and International Boulevard for the next couple of years.

The facility was expected to be completed in 2011.

909 is the number for great food

Miranda is hard to please. We've had many wonderful dining experiences, but she rarely utters the words, "This is better than what I can make." (It is simply the truth; Miranda's food is divine.)

Yet these remarkable words were spoken at 909 Coffee and Wine in Olde Burien. I witnessed it.

Four of us met that day; Miranda, her sister Adelina, Rose and me. We decided to skip the malls and do some holiday shopping in Olde Burien.

It is a wonderful area.

ChoralSounds offers snow check on winter concert

Severe winter weather prevented about 200 ticket-holders from hearing Seattle TV icon Stan Boreson sing about "Walkin' In My Winter Underwear" at ChoralSounds Northwest's Christmas concert on Dec. 14.

Northwest Associated Arts wants to do something about that by offering a $10 credit to any future NWAA production for those holding unused tickets to ChoralSounds "Silver Bells" concert.

Marketing director Paul Bauer said 600 hearty folks attended the performance on Sunday at the Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien.

Des Moines commuter plan updated

The Des Moines City Council has updated its Commute Trip Reduction Plan to reduce local air pollution, traffic congestion and energy consumption, as required by state law.

This plan, mandated in 1991 under Washington's Clean Air Act, requires large employers in the city to implement programs that reduce both drive-alone commuter trips and the number of vehicle miles traveled by employees on those trips.

Currently, Des Moines has two work sites that are required to have commute trip reduction plans for employees - Highline Community College and City Hall.

550 sign petition

The Herald's front page news on Nov. 10th "Park Causes Sparks To Fly" gave top billing to Christine Bartels. Voicing her opinion for the proposed changes to California Place Park in the North Admiral neighborhood, she states "We spend time in every playground that isn't in the area and it would be nice to have one close to home." Well she, her husband and 2 children reside and own a home on Lanham Pl. SW in Highpoint. http://www5.kingcounty.gov/kcgisreports/property_report.aspx?PIN=3278602240.

Hark the Herald

The Herald took a chance on me

When some considered poetry

Was worthy not of printer's ink

No matter how it made you think

Unlike the current "poemophobes"

Who rule from under neon globes

Or claim to be of current "Times"

But cannot see the worth of rhymes

The Herald knew when side by side

Both poetry and news reside
