West Seattle All Time Crimes - 1928

Taking a look at the history of public safety in West Seattle

Editor's note: The West Seattle Herald has been covering news here for nearly a century. Robinson Newspapers (who run the West Seattle Herald) have a massive news archive of Herald coverage dating back to 1928. What follows are crime reports and public safety issues from 1928. Although reporters’ names were not included with stories at that time, their original words remain intact. As more historical crime reports are compiled there will be more installments of West Seattle All Time Crimes.

Lose Auto While Out Duck Hunting

Jim Robinson, well known local contractor, and George Chamberlin, former proprietor of the Weber Hardware at Admiral Way, recently had quite an experience while out duck hunting on the Stanwood flats. The men had Shot 19 nice ducks and were on their way home in the car when they passed a likely-looking spot. Parking the car by the highway, they disappeared for a while and were able to shoot a few more. When they returned to their car, it was gone.

Metro preparing for snow on Tuesday

Press Release:
There is snow in the forecast for later in the day on Tuesday, and it could begin falling during the afternoon commute.

That situation could create very different morning and afternoon travel conditions for bus riders.

Transit users are advised to plan ahead for afternoon and evening trips that could be disrupted, delayed, reduced, or on snow routing.

Even though weather in the morning may be clear, leave from a bus stop or park-and-ride that also has service when buses are on snow routes in case travel conditions deteriorate by the afternoon commute.

Give yourself extra time to reach your evening destination. Busescould be crowded in the early part of the afternoon commute if everyone tries to get home before snowfall is the heaviest.

Metro is urging bus riders to prepare by visiting Metro Online and knowing the snow routing for the buses they will ride tomorrow.

Then, before traveling, riders should check for the most current status of Metro service. Updates to online information begin as early as 4 a.m. and continue as needed until the storm is over.

Westwood Village Target store to remodel and add 'P-Fresh' fresh food

Construction to start in March for late spring rollout

Target at Westwood Village will be expanding the reach of its P-fresh "Prototype Fresh" grocery concept beginning in March. The existing store won't expand itself. Instead it will have extra space devoted to fresh produce, fresh meats (like ground beef and chicken) and baked goods.

The chain has a range of store sizes and the Westwood Village location is smaller than a "SuperTarget" which incorporates a full grocery store but with more groceries than a traditional Target store. The P-fresh concept is meant to serve as a fill-in trip between larger trips to the grocery store. There will not be a full deli or pharmacy.

Police Blotter Week of 1-10-11

Beer theft and a foiled burglary

Last weekend at a grocery store in the Westwood Village on s.w. Barton a female security guard noticed a 5’8” white male wearing blue jeans walk to the beer section. He went for two 24 oz. tallboys of Old Speckled Hen, a British beer known (according to its website) for “its rich amber colour and superb fruity aromas (which) are complemented by a delicious blend of malty tastes.” In reverence to those fruity aromas and malty tastes, the suspect decided to put one in his coat pocket and pay for the other. He walked to the self checkout lane and attempted to pay for the visible beer (valued at $2.79) with a $1000 Costa Rican note. The note only has a USD value of $2.00 so the suspect was a bit short. He put both beers in his coat and headed for the front door. The security guard stopped him and asked for the beer back. “I don’t know what you are talking about,” the man said as he walked around her. She tried to detain the suspect and both fell down outside the sliding doors and rolled into the parking lot. The suspect got up and fled southbound towards s.w. Roxbury St.
