Charging documents show White Center murder stemmed from fist fight over a cigarette denied

“I told you I was coming back for you,” murder defendant allegedly said before firing his weapon

The following details of the Aug. 16 White Center shooting come from a King County Sheriff’s Office detective’s probable cause certificate presented to prosecutors:

It was 12:22 a.m. on Aug. 16. Sweetheart Failautusi and her three acquaintances were waiting for a bus near the intersection of S.W. Roxbury and 15th Ave S.W. when they were approached by three African American males, one identified at the man charged with second degree murder, Anthony H. Smith, 25.

One of the males asked Failautusi’s group for a cigarette and the request was denied.

Smith allegedly responded, “What’s up cuz?, “(expletive) you (expletive)” and “crip.”

A verbal argument erupted and Smith allegedly grabbed Failautusi. She took a swing at him and missed and Smith punched her.

A brawl exploded and one of Failautusi’s acquaintances punched Smith several times, causing scratches and injuries to his face. Sometime during the brawl Smith’s handgun fell from his waistband and one of his friends retrieved it.

“I’ll be right back, it’s not over,” Smith allegedly said.

KCSO deputies responded to the scene but Failautusi told them “everything was okay” and they left.

Dishing the Dirt: Herbs of Summer

By Jeff and Eileen Bidwell

Imagine a sunny, rocky slope in Italy, Greece or Southern France in late summer. This is the ideal environment for many of the Mediterranean herbs that also flourish in our northwest gardens. While this may seem counter intuitive, our Pacific Northwest climate is very similar to the Mediterranean region—several months of chilly wet weather followed by late summers that are dry, sunny and glorious. While Seattle summer typically arrives late, we are often rewarded with sensational Septembers that offer the perfect conditions for growing herbs.

Herb gardens appeal to all of our senses. They are attractive, fragrant and present a world of culinary delights. They can be planted together or blended with ornamentals to add texture and aromatic appeal. They grow well in containers, add interest to perennial borders, and can be grown in vegetable gardens and rockeries. Many gardeners prefer to plant culinary herbs close to their kitchen for easy access. Several herbs also attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.

Traffic Alerts: Nickerson/15th Ave W Ramp Closures for PSE Gas Line Work; Fremont Avenue N tree trimming and road repaving

Nickerson/15th Avenue W ramp:

In preparation for construction to build the Ship Canal Trail, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) will relocate a gas line that runs under the Nickerson/15th Avenue W ramp, just north of W Emerson Street. To complete the work, PSE must close the Nickerson/15th Avenue W ramp to southbound 15th Avenue W from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day for up to five days, beginning August 24.The roadway will remain open on weekends, with work resuming August 29 and 30 as needed.

During this utility work PSE will detour most traffic from W Nickerson Street to W Emerson Street heading east, to access southbound 15th Avenue W. Due to the tight turns, large trucks will be detoured onto westbound W Emerson Street, south along Gilman Avenue W to 20th Avenue W, and then eastbound on W Dravus Street to 15th Avenue W.

Seattle Department of Transportation work in the area, to build the Ship Canal Trail, is expected to begin in early September.

Mountain to Sound Outfitters planning expansion

Mountain to Sound Outfitters, the West Seattle business focused on outdoor sports and gear is about to grow.

The space directly to the east of them, that was occupied by Westside Auto Repair will become the new area for the company likely by November 1 but it could be earlier. Westside Auto's Gary Putman closed the business in early June due to illness.

It represents a 2000 square foot increase in size for the business which is in admittedly cramped quarters now.
Whittaker said, "The space became available, and we want to provide year round SUP and Kayak Sales. With the volume of skis/boards winter gear coming in, we needed to grow."

The work to renovate the space will be carried out by the staff and friends who will contribute to the effort and a celebration event will be staged when the opening of the new space becomes official.

Mountain to sound outfitters.is located at 3602 Southwest Alaska Street.
