UPDATE: Motorhome equipped with home dialysis machine visits WS Kidney Center

Patient & doctor recommend home dialysis over clinics

UPDATED SEPT. 17

Northwest Kidney Centers patient Jim Smith, who is on a national road trip to educate the public about home dialysis, parked right outside the entrance to the West Seattle Kidney Center, 4045 Delridge Way Sept. 14 & 15 in his motorhome to invite the public and health care professionals to join him while he dialyzed himself in the comfort of the RV.

Home hemodialysis allows patients to decide when and where to dialyze, and also allows them to dialyze more often during the week, which is better for their long-term health compared to patients scheduled for three, four hour visits per week in dialysis centers.

At home, they use the machine about six days a week for about three hours per day. But they save time avoiding the commute to the clinic, and, according to doctors and patients, they feel strong after their home dialysis sessions.

Knife-wielding man shot by deputy tops police blotter

Deputy shoots man with knife
On September 2 at about 10:50 p.m. two sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call about a man assaulting his wife in the 10000 block of Des Moines Memorial Drive. Deputies had also responded in August 2010 to a domestic violence call at the same apartment. That incident resulted in the arrest of the man on domestic violence charges. The 36-year-old man is a convicted felon with two assault 3rd degree convictions. There is a current No Contact Order in place prohibiting contact between the man and his wife and children. The man had a knife and was reportedly assaulting his wife when the deputies arrived. The Sheriff's deputy, who fired the shot, is a 25-year veteran officer. The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center and was listed in critical condition.

Highline Medical Center to open urgent care facility in Des Moines

Highline Medical Center has announced that it will bring urgent care services to Des Moines this fall.

Urgent Care will open on Tuesday, Nov. 1, adjacent to Des Moines Family Medicine on Marine View Drive. The urgent care center is open 7 a.m.- 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sundays.

Urgent care centers typically treat a variety of minor illnesses and injuries, from colds and flu to sprains and strains. Urgent care isn't a replacement for your regular doctor, medical center officials emphasize.

But if a patient doesn't have a doctor, or the doctor isn't available, and the patient wants to be seen right away, it can be a great solution, they said.

Highline staffers remind patients if it is a life-threatening emergency, call 9-1-1 or get to the nearest ER. Highline's s ER in Burien provides emergency services around the clock. Highline Medical Center has posted a list of when to go to the emergency room and when to go to the urgent care on its website.

Highline School Board approves new Office of Equity and Family Engagement

Office will lead implementation of district's equity plan

Press release

Highline Public Schools has established an Office of Equity and Family Engagement as part of its effort to improve academic achievement of students from all ethnic groups.

Bernadette Merikle has been appointed as director of the new department.

For the past two years, Ms. Merikle has been Highline's community engagement manager. She will continue to oversee parent engagement efforts and the district's family center, which assists parents with enrollment, language interpretation, and resolution of concerns and complaints.

In addition, the Office of Equity and Family Engagement will lead the work outlined in the district's equity action plan. The equity plan was developed by a committee of community members, parents, and staff under Merikle's leadership in response to the school board's equity policy. The equity policy was adopted by the board just before the 2010-11 school year.

Currently, the Office of Equity is working with an independent firm to conduct an assessment of equity in Highline Public Schools. Results of the assessment will be presented to the school board next spring.

Celebrate Hiawatha Park's 100-year birthday this Saturday, Sept. 17

A birthday party will be held this Saturday, Sept. 17, for the public to celebrate Hiawatha Park.

The park was designed by John Charles Olmsted (1852-1920), the stepson of Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903), who designed New York City's Central Park.

According to the history of Hiawatha pdf, see attached, "His 1903 master plan laid out a 20-mile-long system of parks and playfields strung along scenic boulevards. Lake Washington Boulevard linked Seward Park, Colman Park, Frink Park, and Washington Park (home of the future Arboretum), and he redesigned Capitol Hill's Volunteer Park (a former cemetery acquired in 1874). Olmsted's plan also created Ravenna Boulevard, lowered and landscaped Green Lake, and redesigned Woodland Park on Guy Phinney's former estate, which the city had acquired in 1899.

"John Olmsted also designed the city's first neighborhood playgrounds. His proposed boulevards ringing the summit of Queen Anne Hill and connecting Ballard, Interbay, Magnolia Bluff, and Fort Lawton, which were only partially developed."
