SLIDESHOW- UPDATE-Unity Village apartment housing Grand Opening set for Nov. 16 in White Center

A look inside the new apartment units; Now 100% rented

Unity Village (formerly Strength of Place Village) an effort to create affordable apartment homes in White Center will hold its Grand Opening ceremonies Nov. 16.

According to Resident Manager Jasmine Brown, "We just got to 100% rented (and 90% occupied) this week though people had to give notice to their former residence so some units will be open for the tour this weekend." Brown has seen the project come together over the course of the past year since it broke ground on Sept. 15, 2010. "I think it's an asset here and it shows that affordable housing can be nice and well designed and family friendly. Most of our units are two and three buildings and that was the builders intent." A requirement for living there is to have a minimum number of people from two in a two bedroom unit up to seven people in a three bedroom unit. That can of course include whole families from grandparents to grand children.

Metaphysical Co-Op Emerald Spiral to close; Group will still host shows and events

What Susan Harmon began as a way for area psychics and others interested in metaphysics to work together and to provide a place for them to call home, The Emerald Spiral will close at the end of November.

The business that the West Seattle Herald reported on in August of last year fell victim to the flagging economy and a changing set of members. The location at 5910 California Avenue Southwest had hosted numerous Psychic Saturdays and has been an outlet for products that for many people, hold significance such as crystals, amulets, art, numerous books and other metaphysical items. But events created by Harmon and others they called Psychic Expos will continue in Kent at the Kent Commons.

Harmon sent the following letter to those on her mailing list announcing the closure.

Hello Friends of Emerald Spiral:

We are pleased to let you know that Emerald Spiral is taking a new direction.

SLIDESHOW: Girls Soccer- Eastside Catholic upsets West Seattle

By Kyle Howard

Eastside Catholic went up against West Seattle in a Metro League matchup on Thursday night at Rainier Beach High School. West Seattle was the first seed for the playoffs after winning their division; Eastside Catholic was the number 3 seed. No time was wasted for Eastside Catholic who started the scoring just a minute and a half into the game with a nice header from Malia Bachesta on a corner kick giving them the 1-0 lead.

West Seattle goal keeper Hailey Watkins was very busy with Eastside Catholic’s offense controlling the game. The Crusaders had nine shots on goal in the first half, but Watkins did a great job defending the goal. With time running down in the half K.K. Standish scored with 2:25 left on the clock. Just 25 seconds later she scored her second goal pushing their lead to 3-0 at the half. Eastside Catholic outshot West Seattle 9 -2.
