SLIDESHOW: Marty Riemer celebrated his goodbye at the Feedback Lounge

Long time KMTT 103.7 FM announcer hangs up his radio headphones (for now)

With the words, "I'm sure our paths will cross again," and a spin of David Gray's "The one I love" Marty Riemer closed his career at KMTT 103.7 FM on Thursday, Dec. 20. He had recorded his last show earlier in the day and was already at a party for him at the Feedback Lounge.

Riemer has been down this road before, only the last time it was not by choice. That time he was escorted out by security guards.

This time he chose to simply move on, without a clear plan going forward. Riemer has operated his own company Twisted Scholar that produces educational DVD's and audio work but for now he's going to take it easy...and of course maintain his Friday 9:30am podcast from his West Seattle basement. His company is "on the verge of getting a contract with UW Medicine to do podcasts for them," and he will still do voice over work for Carter Subaru and West Seattle Coins.

His farewell party was attended by about 80 people, and was marked by a lot of laughter, hugs, and affirmations. There were zero tears.

His former producer Brian Muchinsky said, " He looks happier right now than I can remember seeing him in a very long time."

SLIDESHOW: Wolverines take a bite out of the Pirates and win going away 71-58

In Seamount League play the Evergreen Wolverines laid a beat down on the Highline Pirates.

Both teams started slowly and at the end of the first period Evergreen held a slim 12-11 lead. This trend continued through the rest of the first half. Play was a little sloppy on both sides with each team deep in the penalty situation and when the half ended Evergreen had ten fouls to Highlines nine. The Wolverines did extend their lead to six and the half ended with Evergreen on top 29-23.

As the halftime break came to an end, the Pirates had been on the court warming up for several minutes, there was no sign of Evergreen. Coach Tony White kept his team in the locker room till the last moment. Whatever he was telling his team made an immediate impact.

The Wolverines came out biting and clawing in the third period. Evergreens Center, the noticeably taller 6’ 5” Alex Campbell, began to exert his height and became the power in the post, blocking shots and was unstoppable on offense. Alex would finish the night with a team and game high 31 points.

Lafayette Elementary's Shauna Heath gets a new job; Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction for SPS

Seattle Public Schools Superintendent José Banda announced the promotion of Lafayette Elementary School Principal Shauna Heath to a new role for the school district. She will take on the job of Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction.

Banda's letter reads:

"Today I’m announcing a leadership change at Lafayette. Your principal, Shauna Heath, has been appointed Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction. In her new role, Ms. Heath will oversee Early Learning, College and Career Readiness and core content areas.

I know Lafayette staff and families went through a principal search process last summer, and I understand it is a hardship to have a leadership change mid-year. But we need Ms. Heath’s leadership to help all of our nearly 50,000 students. Congratulations to Ms. Heath, and I know she will be missed at Lafayette.

New Futures students get scientific thanks to the after-school ESC program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Derby Races with a Science Twist

December 19th- A block of wood, four wheels, weights, and an hour of scientific enjoyment. Students from the social service organization, New Futures, worked with their science instructor from the Environmental Science Center (ESC) to discover the physical laws of gravity through a pinewood derby race.
A group of kids racing cars might seem frivolous, but on Tuesday, December 18th, the students were joined by a group of supporters who knew better. As a collaborative effort, several people with similar interests met to discuss and observe after-school science education in action. Included were Gilda Wheeler, Sustainability and Environmental Program Coordinator for the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction; Kimberly Kotovic, Highline Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Coordinator; Darcy Nothnagle, Google representative; plus the executive directors, board members, and staff of the Environmental Science Center, New Futures, and King County Housing Authority.

SLIDESHOW: Mount Rainier escapes pressure

AUBURN - And they all toppled down has been the recurring report of the fate of all Mount Rainier (Des Moines) girls basketball opponents thus far.

With a strong impetus provided by their experienced returning players from last season's Class 4A state third place team, the Rams have ferociously felled their foes by an average of more than 25 points per game. This includes a devastating demolition of a previously ninth-ranked squad.

Tuesday, Dec. 18, turned into a truly tenacious task in the toughest test of the season.

Rallying from three seven point deficits in the first half, the state No.1 ranked Mount Rainier Rams finally raced away from the Auburn Riverside Ravens for a deceptive looking 70-55 win to raise their unbeaten status to 7-0 in the South Puget Sound League North and 9-0 overall. Auburn Riverside fell to 4-2 and 5-3 respectively.

Holding a slim 54-50 lead against the Ravens with just more than seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Rams began their breakaway.

Corbray, local medical marijuana entrepreneur, given federal sentence

Brionne Corbray - West Seattle resident, family man and medical marijuana dispensary owner on California Ave S.W. and in White Center – was sentenced to five years probation and a $25,000 fine for federal drug trafficking charges on Dec. 19, according to a Seattle Times report.

Up until Nov. 15, 2011, Corbray was a busy man, running two local dispensaries and one in North Seattle, all under the name GAME Collective. On that day, it all changed when DEA agents raided his businesses and home, taking all marijuana, cash, business receipts, patient records and vehicle. It was a far-reaching Puget Sound raid of several dispensaries – focusing on operations the federal government said were operating “outside the spirit of state law.”
