Ballardite makes difference in Sierra Leone communities

By Christy Wolyniak

“Let’s donate our clothes, you’re helping children in Africa.”

It’s an age-old line told by parents to children that perhaps many still believe. But from a business perspective, the donations can be damaging -- free clothes can be sold on a cheap market and leave another child’s parent unemployed.

That’s the perspective of Ballardite Dan Lavin, a business accountant who also runs the Community Initiative Program (CIP) in Sierra Leone. He calls the gifting of goods such as clothes and buildings “anti-development,” or organizations unwittingly doing more harm than good with their aid.

More than an accountant, Lavin began working with the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone 23 years ago in the village of Makrugba near the base of the Kangari Hills. He made a friend there named Sullay, who started a relief organization following the war. After Sullay passed away, Lavin was asked to continue the organization, which under his stewardship would become CIP.

Update 2 for June 5
Seattle police have confirmed our report from yesterday that the SUV in a Harbor Ave. S.W. rollover crash was indeed stolen, and the driver fled the scene.

According to Det. Mark Jamieson, the beige 2002 Lexus SUV was traveling north on Harbor Ave. S.W. with five occupants when the driver lost control and plowed into three parked cars before flipping on it's side.

Everyone self-extricated and the four passengers stayed with the stolen vehicle while the driver ran off with unknown injuries.

Police did not report any arrests of the four passengers, but are still actively searching for the driver.

Update for 1 p.m., June 4
Traffic investigators are still evaluating the scene at 2501 Harbor Ave. S.W., and said to expect at least another hour of road closures.

The Herald spoke with a man at the scene who said he was the owner of the flipped SUV involved in this morning's crash. He said his vehicle had been stolen from the Alki area earlier in the day and he was not driving at the time.

Pet of the Week: Sadie is a social dog with a thing for socks

Kathleen and Bruce MacPherson got their dog Sadie a long time ago, 12 years to be exact, and she is 14 years old. "We adopted her from a family that was neglecting her, but they recognized that, and gave her up for adoption along with her brother Wesley." She is a West Highland Terrier.

Sadie eats super premium Costco dog food, and is fed twice a day.

But mostly, Sadie is social. Not so much with other dogs, though she's fine with them. Really Sadie has expanded the social circle for the MacPherson's. "We walk her every morning and every afternoon and we know all the children and all the doggies in our neighborhood. She has been like an ambassador. We know everyone on our street plus many blocks around," said Kathleen. "She's an ice breaker. When people don't know you they are hesitant to say hello, but they see Sadie and say, 'Oh what a cute dog' and then the conversation begins."
