Mom saves child from broad daylight abduction attempt

The motherly instincts of a 32-year-old woman saved her three-year-old son from an early evening abduction attempt on the quiet 10400 block of 3rd Ave. S.W. (in unincorporated King County, near White Center) on June 2.

Corey Hines and his wife Melissa had just returned from Olympia with their three and five year old sons and were preparing to take advantage of an ideal early summer evening by firing up the barbeque and playing in the yard, just as many surrounding neighbors were doing. It was just before 6 p.m.

Melissa (who chose not to give her last name in a media interview on June 3) said she was having a lighthearted footrace with her three year old to the strawberry bush in the backyard when a festive family gathering turned dangerous.
In a flash, the mother said a lanky man dressed in all black, including a ski mask and gloves, came around the corner of the house with her son in his arms.

A black eye, a few broken nails, several bumps on the head and a safe son later, Melissa was able to talk about the event the following day.

The Art of Gardening without really trying: The “Lazy Gardener’s” oasis still growing for the upcoming Highline Garden Tour on June 8th

Garden Tour is June 8

By Rebekah LaSala
Special to the Highline Times

Stephen Lamphear is much more than a lazy gardener, referring to his “Lazy Gardener” column from 1999 to 2007 that he had with the Highline Times. Lamphear was a former Burien City Council member from 1998 to 2005. Lamphear is a spirited combination of a sage zen master truly connected to his garden and a man who can turn a black gardening thumb green. Lamphear’s zen-like wisdom and passionate advice can take the fear factor out of gardening for many.

Lamphear’s garden will be featured in the upcoming Highline Garden Tour on June 8th, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Tour features private gardens in Burien, Normandy Park, and SeaTac designed to inspire new ideas and the latest techniques. Ed Baldwin, General Manager for the Highline SeaTac Botanical Gardens Center states that at the Center (at 13735 24th Ave S, SeaTac), “We have a lot of irises and summer flowers in prolific bloom this year.”

Des Moines Councilmember Scott will not seek reelection

By Shakira Ericksen
Special to the Highline Times

Councilmember Carmen Scott announced that she has cancelled her candidacy and will not be running for re-election at last Thursday’s Des Moines City Council meeting.

Scott has been a life-long resident of Des Moines. She’s been serving on the City council since 2006. Earlier, Scott served a brief term from 1988-1991.

“I had totally unexpected medical issues come up in the last few days which alarmed my family and brought on a lot of tests,” she said.
Scott said that although she is undergoing tests they are so far inconclusive.

“I thought a lot about it, I love the challenge of it (being on the City Council.)” she said. “I guess I wound up, after listening to the doctor, realizing that I’m pushing myself too hard. I would have really liked to continue.”

Scott said that she has had a meeting with her opponent.

“After talking with him I felt comfortable that he would do a good job, or I wouldn’t have dropped out,” she said.

SeaTac city council explores benefits of state transportation package

Renewal of ICLEI membership also mentioned

By Gwen Davis
Special to the Highline Times

“One of the things going on in Olympia is the transportation package for 2013 that will support a wide variety of transportation projects,” said SeaTac Mayor Tony Anderson. “It will support projects necessary in our state to maintain our quality of life and support our jobs.”

On May 28, during the SeaTac city council meeting, councilmembers discussed how vital it is that the state-wide transportation package passes in the state legislature, while also acknowledging that SeaTac will benefit more than most cities from the package.

Freight and cargo coming in and out of the Port of Seattle needs better infrastructure, city councilmembers said. As it is, some products made in Washington are being transported to California because California’s ports are more cost-effective.

“There’s something wrong with that,” Anderson said.
Additionally, the package will reduce I-5 traffic by at least 15 percent, he said. The package will create 100,000 construction jobs, with 19,000 permanent jobs.

Hi everyone - your 50th reunion committee has been working this past year to think of creative ways to use your generous donations , the profits from our auction and golf tournament and the sale of t shirts and pins - all to benefit students at West Seattle High School - Here is what we have done on behalf of the class of 1962

Registration open for 29th annual Night Out Against Crime

As summer is approaching, it's time to think about registering your block for the annual Night Out Against Crime event. If you're new to the event, it's basically an opportunity to get a police-sanctioned street party where you can meet neighbors, promote safety against crimes and have a good time.

Night Out 2013 is Tuesday, August 6, 2013 and SPD's registration link for Night Out Against Crime 2013 is now active. Interested in taking part? Go to: http://www.seattle.gov/police/nightout/default.htm

There are a few things to note, says SPD:

  • Once you have registered your event, you will get email verification. You can go back in and edit and/or cancel your event later if you need to.
  • The Night Out invitations available on their website are in pdf and are editable and printable from there.
  • You can choose to add your event to a map as well. To share your event, go to: http://www.seattle.gov/police/nightout/nightoutevents.htm. It can take approximately 48 hours to populate the map.
