Optimism fuels Ram tennis hopes

Optimism built on improvement characterizes the 2013 edition of the Mount Rainier High School boys tennis team.

Although the Rams lost James Postlewait to graduation and PJ Liu is not turning out due to the move of the Aviation School to another area, Mount Rainier has reason to expect better results than last season's South Puget Sound League North 1-9 fifth place record.

Juniors Kevin Nguyen (co-captain), Tyler Andrews, Austin Sharma (co-captain) and Daniel Russell saw varsity experience last season while sophomore Kepe Bonner is back as a top singles player. Newcomer Sam Verbon is a junior who is challenging Bonner for the No. 1 singles spot.

Ryan Rhodes, sophomore Anatish Vashist and junior Justin Fortner saw most of their action in junior varsity last season. Milan Crone and Danny Vujic are freshman that will make their mark this season.

Entering his 28th year of coaching boys and girls tennis at Mount Rainier, Tim Lee has specific reasons for increased enthusiasm as given on Wednesday, September 5th..

Large sinkhole opens up in South Park

By David Rosen

A large sinkhole opened up along S 96th St and 8th Ave S in South Park due to the overwhelming rainstorm overnight Sept. 5-6. It's approximately 20 feet long, 7 feet wide and 5 feet deep.

The spot was recently an issue at the end of June where a small dip in the road formed. A road crew from King County came out and fixed it in July. Overnight the sinkhole opened up in that same spot but this time was a lot worse. No announcement has been made as yet on when the road will reopen.

Traffic is currently being routed around it.

A water main is also affected by the sinkhole and is potentially involved in the pavement collapse but that has not yet been determined.

Elizabeth Gordon joins White Center’s NHUAC

The North Highline Unincorporated Area Council - a White Center community group – took a few minutes to hear from, vote for, and welcome their newest member on Sept. 5: Elizabeth Gordon, co-owner of Uncle Mike’s Superlicious BBQ restaurant in White Center.

NHUAC President Barbara Dobkin decided to cut through the red tape at the meeting’s onset, foregoing bylaws that would make the process of bringing their new member on a lengthier ordeal, and Gordon was allowed to explain her interest in joining the group.

“I would say that one of our (speaking for her husband and co-owner Mike Gordon) big interests is the well-being of the community all together and how it is progressing and developing, and barriers to it becoming a stronger community,” Gordon said.

“The first time I came to a NHUAC meeting it seemed like this was one place where concerns could be voiced and there was some access to county government without having to go to Seattle.”

Ballard Brewery District gets more love

Ballard's brewery boom seems to just keep booming. As we await the arrivals of Stoup Brewing and Bad Jimmy's, KUOW gives a shoutout to our bustling "Brewery District."

KUOW's Joshua McNichol's, a Ballard resident who has contributed a few pieces for the Ballard News-Tribune, produced a piece called "Ballard Brewery District Thrives By Balancing Cooperation And Competition."

Using the curmodgeonly salty dog owner of Maritime Pacific Brewing, George Hancock, as an anchor for the story, McNichols describes the sprouting and flourishing of Ballard breweries. While Hancock used to be the only brewer in town, now there are about ten, with a couple in progress and likely more on the way.

But rather than creating fierce competition, the Ballard brewers have taken to helping each other and sustaining one another.

Ballard Crime Watch: Li'l Woody's gets burglarized on Free Burger Day; more burglaries

Storage unit burglarized, but no sign of forced entry

Sept. 1, 9:21 p.m. -- A woman and her boyfriend lost $6,000 worth of items when someone gained entry into their storage unit.

Officers could find no signs of forced entry and the woman said they used the lock -- which they made sure was locked tight -- that the manager gave them. Officers concluded that there is no way to tell at this moment if it was an inside job or if someone was able to get ahold of a spare key.

The victims lost their clothes, lots of stuffed animals, one flatscreen television, Nike shoes, coach purses and "lots of women's shoes."

Burglar takes advantage of Free Burger Day at Li'l Woody's

Sept, 2, 1:49 p.m., 2000 Block of NW Market St -- During Li'l Woody's Free Burger Day, which was held to celebrate their second overall anniversary, servers were more focused on serving the crowd of hamburger-hungry zombies than any potential crimes. (Who could resist the siren call of a beautiful, juicy Big Woody with a side of crack fries?)

Pet of the Week: Harold is happy living in an historic home

Jordan Adams got her dog Harold 10 years ago as a stray (he's about 13 now). He's a Great Pyrenees mix she said and she found him in South Dakota on the Pineridge Indian Reservation where she was doing small construction work. She was 15 years old and with a church group. "He was one of the wild dogs, except he didn't look anything like the other dogs. They were all kind of medium and mud colored. They told me he had arrived about a year earlier and they didn't know where from. They called him 'Polar Bear' but I fell in love with him and had to take him home."

Her father was not happy about the new arrival, "but I convinced him that we could just keep him for a couple of weeks, to get his health up. And he complained about his name. So I asked, 'What would you name him?' and he said, 'Harold' and we've called him that ever since."
