SLIDESHOW: Arts a Glow lights up the Highline night with color

By David Rosen

Hundreds of people including some decorated in fancy costumes came out to Dottie Harper Park in Burien on Sept. 7 for the annual Arts a Glow festival that kicked off with style. Lantern art and performers, face painting, lantern making, food vendors and music entertained the crowd.

This year’s Arts-A-Glow festival featured six local and regional lantern artists who created temporary, site-specific installations for Burien’s sixth annual celebration of light.

Below is some info about the artists.

Annett Mateo (Seattle) is brought beautiful illuminated dragon puppets that were installed in the park and were in the procession.

Shariana Mundi (White Center) created "Flight of Fancy" with students with disabilities in her Burien art workshops. Inspired by James Christensen's flying fish and flying ships they brought mysterious and mythical creatures of the deep into our own Milky Way.

SLIDESHOW: West Seattle Has a Tough Opener, Losing to Fife 41-0

By Paul Moseley

West Seattle High school opened their 2013 football season away in a Metro/SPSL interconference match-up against the Fife Trojans. The Wildcats, coming off a 4-5 season last year, is in a rebuilding year, with only 2 starters returning (QB Jamie Maples and FS/Punter Carter Mensing) and only 3 seniors total on their 29 man roster.

The young Wildcats got an early season learning experience against Fife, who were physically bigger, older and have a roster 30 players larger than West Seattle's.

West Seattle kicked off, and the Wildcat defense played strong, holding the Trojans to 4 and out. On West Seattle's first possession, Maples was picked off by Fife linebacker Knapp Tanner who ran 40 yards to put Fife on the board 7-0.

After West Seattle and Fife traded a couple fumbles, the West Seattle defense settled in and held Fife to a 4th and short...then Fife's offense opened up. Going for it on 4th, Fife unleashed a consecutive set of hand-offs to 285 pound Sarte Monike, who did big-boys everywhere proud. After 3 consecutive runs, Monike was in the end zone and Fife was up 14-0.

SLIDESHOW: Evergreen beats Sealth in game between friendly rivals

Evergreen High School of White Center fended off Chief Sealth of West Seattle, 37-26, in a football battle between friendly rivals Friday.

The two schools share a boundary for the areas they draw students from, but are not in the same league or even the same school district.

Evergreen is in the Seamount League and the Highline School District while Chief Sealth is a Seattle school and a member of the Metro League.

But Friday's game was the non-league season opener for both teams that are of Class 3A size, and both wound up finding many ways to score before it was over.

Evergreen jumped out to a lopsided 37-6 lead by halftime before Chief Sealth's Seahawks dominated the second half, 20-0, to make things more interesting -- even though the final score was as close as they got.
Evergreen will continue the non-league portion of its schedule when it visits Orting for a 7 p.m. game this coming Friday while Chief Sealth must get ready to plunge into Metro League play when it hosts Cleveland at the same time at the Southwest Athletic Complex across the street from its campus.

Hotel Laundry Room fire could have been worse

City of SeaTac, Wash. September 6, 2013 – A late night fire in a hotel laundry room could have been much worse than it was if it had not had a sprinkler head in it.

Firefighters were called to a hotel in the 17300 block of International Blvd. S. at 11:49 last night to investigate a report of an automatic fire alarm.

When firefighters arrived, they were notified by a security officer of the fire in the first floor laundry room. As they approached the laundry room, firefighters found smoke that went from floor to ceiling. They could also hear a sprinkler head that had been activated due to the heat.

While firefighters from SeaTac dealt with the fire, others from Tukwila evacuated the hotel guests from the building. The North Highline and Port of Seattle Fire Departments also responded to the fire.

The fire was quickly extinguished and everyone let back inside.

Sprinkler systems are mandatory in many buildings and help control fires until the fire department arrives. The movement of water through the sprinkler system pipes after a head activates is what sets off the alarm.

The fire is under investigation.

White Center crime report: Numbers are up, but KCSO hopes they'll dip soon

White Center Storefront Deputy BJ Myers, speaking to the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council on Sept. 6, shared the latest in crime trends for North Highline. Here are the highlights:

- Myers said North Highline, in addition to West Seattle, Arbor Heights (a W.S. neighborhood) and Burien have all experienced higher than normal summertime burglary, car prowl and auto theft numbers. He hopes those numbers will dip back down as summer comes to a close.

- The Top Hat neighborhood of North Highline has been getting hit especially hard by property crime, according to Myers. He encouraged residents to keep valuables out of their cars, communicate with neighbors, and call 911 “if you see something funny.”
