Why I support I-517

By Mimi Gates for Robinson newspapers

I am Mimi Gates and I support Initiative 517 because I am a strong believer in our initiative rights which our state has had for over a century. Our right to initiative and petition our government is the most important tool we have to push back when government does things we don't like.

Initiative 517's primary policy change is guaranteeing you the right to vote on qualified initiatives.

In a unanimous ruling, the Washington State Supreme Court in 2005 rejected an effort by special interest groups to stop the people from voting on a qualified initiative. Their reason: "Because ballot measures are often used to express popular will and to send a message to elected representatives, pre-election review unduly infringes on free speech."

Despite this clear ruling by the Supreme Court, dozens of citizen-sponsored initiatives - liberal and conservative - were blocked from a public vote in recent years even though local citizens followed all the rules.

In King County, after local citizens qualified an initiative to reduce the size of the King County Council, the county sued to block the vote.

Jim Langston is running for office against a dead man and wants your vote

Jim Langston is a candidate for Position 2 in King County Water District #54 in Des Moines and wants your vote.

His name is not on the ballot because he is running as a write-in candidate. The only name on the ballot is that of John Rosentangle, who died in August after the ballots were printed.

By law, the candidate who receives the most votes, dead or alive, is the winner.

To vote for Langston in this election, voters must fill in the write-in space and enter the name "Jim Langston" on the accompanying line. Otherwise, voters will be deferring the power of their vote to the district offices of the county council, Langston stated in a press release.

Langston noted that he has attended all of the commission meetings for the past three months and helped load cases of water into people's cars during the recent water crisis in Des Moines.

Langston is a fourth generation Des Moines resident. He is a retired public school educator, is vice-president and program chair of the Des Moines Historical Society. He is also a member of several other boards and commissions.

He can be reached at 206-878-7205

A ranch dip temper tantrum turns violent at Jack in the Box

From Seattle Police Blotter

After learning that the first two packets of ranch dressing were free but that he would have to pay for a third, a customer at the Ballard Jack In the Box flew into a rage and attacked a 68-year-old man.

It was just before 12:30 PM when the suspect walked up to the counter of the Jack in the Box in the 900 block of Leary Way and asked a clerk for some ranch dip.

The cashier obliged the man’s request and provided two packets of dip, but the man demanded a third.
After the clerk told him another packet would cost 25 cents, the man became incensed and began yelling about how he was being overcharged.

In an attempt to prevent the man from causing a scene, the cashier provided the suspect a third container. This did little to calm the suspect.

When a 68-year-old patron overheard the man hassling the cashier and stepped in, the suspect shoved the 68-year-old man to the ground. The 68-year-old was not seriously injured.

Police Blotter Week of 10-14-13

Burglar takes everything except the pot
While the family was away at work and school on Oct. 7, an unknown burglar broke into a home by forcing his or her way through a door jam on 6th Ave. S.W. near Roxbury St. The exhaustive list of stolen items included an Ipad, a 10-pair collection of vintage Air Jordan shoes, large sums of cash and handfuls of jewelry, a Gucci wallet, five Coach purses that were on display in a glass case, a checkbook and credit cards. One item the suspect apparently had no interest in was a 2-gram bag of marijuana found sitting on the floor of one of the ransacked rooms. While police and the victims worked through the list of stolen items one of the victims received a text message to her phone stating her credit card had just been used for a gasoline purchase in Tukwila. Police dusted the scene for fingerprints.

LETTER: CANDIDATE FORUMS 2013 ALMOST OVER NOW

There are times when you want to reach out and pat on old friend on the back and say, “Thank you, job well done”. As a moderator for many candidate forums, our old friend Don Riecks (Pronounced Rex) has always been fair and forceful in keeping things in order. But at the recent Hilltop Candidate Forum, he nearly met his match in unruly conduct and inattentive candidates. He should be commended for how he handled the situation as it evolved. Thank you, Don from one citizen to another.

Some days before this episode and at another forum put on in Wesley Retirement Center, it was also kept in check and more easily maintained. Exception: One questioner who spoke with many personal pronouns, “I” and “me” and had to be reminded that a question was anticipated.
