SeaTac Businesses Brace for Impacts of $15 Minimum Wage Law

A hand recount today of the ballots cast on SeaTac Proposition 1, the $15 hour an hour minimum wage law, does not appear to have changed the outcome, according to observers for the No side in the campaign.

“Close only counts in horseshoes,” said Mike West, Co-Chair of Common Sense SeaTac, the citizen and business group that opposed the union-backed initiative. “Even though the citizens of SeaTac are narrowly divided on the wisdom of this idea, the businesses now have to prepare for living with this measure.”

“As we said during the campaign, this measure will have undesirable effects. Across some 70 businesses, there are likely to be price increases, layoffs, changes in hiring, as well as the administrative costs expected on the taxpayers of SeaTac. But business managers are innovators and problem-solvers. Collectively we will work with the City to seek the least costly path to implementation and individually each business will work to survive,” West said.

LETTER: Paying for Parking

To the Editor:

I would like to go on record in opposition to permit LA2031-0032. Paying for parking at the marina will create undue hardships to thousands of low income and elderly people and will discourage young families who now benefit from a place of beauty and freedom at the waterfront.

Paying for parking will bring ruin to the Farmer's Market just now when it has really caught on.

How can paying for parking at the marina possibly benefit Des Moines at the very time our community needs all the good will it can get?

I do not believe this is a well thought out decision. Please reconsider.

Additionally, you have insulted all to whom you sent a letter telling them to read the documents on the website. On your site I was given the royal runaround and never did find the documents. It makes me wonder....

City of Burien Ready for Cold Temperatures and Snowfall With New Equipment

According to the City Manager’s Report prepared for the December 2nd Burien City Council meeting, the City of Burien is equipped and ready to handle snow and ice that may be part of Highline’s winter season.

With this weekend’s temperatures hovering around record lows and chances of snow spotting the area’s forecasts, the City is assuring the community that the Public Works Department is ready to handle whatever may cross Burien’s 140 linear miles, or over 300 lane-miles, of roadway. The City is currently equipped with two 5-yard dump trucks that are equipped with plows and sand spreaders, a single 1-ton dump truck with a smaller plow, and a single 1.5-ton truck with a plow and 500 gallon sprayer. Liquid brine, purchased from the City of SeaTac, is used along with a mix of salt and sand in spreaders. If weather conditions surpass the level the City’s equipment can handle, both King County and Burien’s new solid waste removal provider, CleanScapes, are available for backup plowing and spreading.

Burien City Council Appoints Lance McIntosh to Vacant Parks & Recreation Advisory Board Position

By Matt Wendland

Lance McIntosh is now the newest member of the Burien Parks and Recreation Advisory Board after being appointed by the Burien City Council at their meeting on December 2nd.

The Burien Parks and Recreation Board is a seven member committee established to provide guidance and direction to the Burien City Council on the City’s future parks and recreation programs and priorities. Each member of the advisory board was appointed by the City Council to fulfill four year terms. In 2012 the City Council enacted a new policy that established term limits for their advisory boards which limited advisors to two consecutive four year terms. West Seattle couple donates new medic unit to the Seattle Fire Department

information from the Seattle Fire Department

The Seattle Fire Department will put a brand new Medic Unit into service thanks to the generous donation of a West Seattle couple.

In 2012, the estate of William C. Sanders and Mildred Krahmer Sanders donated more than $550,000 to the City of Seattle to purchase two new medic units for the Seattle Fire Department.

“My aunt and uncle cared passionately for the work of the City of Seattle Fire Department and their medic program and the thousands of people that the program serves each year,” said family member Donald L. Krahmer, Jr. of Portland, Oregon who served as trustee of the estate. “The gift represents, in a small way, a payback of the huge blessing that the City of Seattle and its citizens gave both of them during their time in the Pacific Northwest.”
