Op-Ed- It is time to bring Lolita home

By Howard Garrett, Orca Network

The campaign for Lolita's retirement is based on research by Ken Balcomb at the Center for Whale Research on San Juan Island. In 1995, Governor Mike Lowry, Sec. of State Ralph Munro and Balcomb announced the start of the Lolita Come Home campaign. Since then Orca Network has conducted a public awareness campaign to present the case for her return home.

Despite many demonstrations in Miami, a powerful documentary called Lolita – Slave to Entertainment, and much national attention on Lolita, the park is still making over $1 million a year from Lolita's circus routines and has refused to consider our proposal. Annual Penn Cove Capture Commemoration events are held each August 8.

In February, 2010, a distressed captive male orca named Tilikum killed his human companion, SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau. Public response to the traumatic event was immediate, intense, and sustained. Virtually every media report has mentioned that orcas should never be held captive in the first place.

Extreme beer book signing plus tasting? What's not to like?

The Brewtal Truth Guide to Extreme Beers author coming to the Beer Junction Dec. 12

West Seattle beer drinkers have a large range of choices of brew thanks to enterprising retailers but there are beers and then there are extreme beers. These are outrageous brews with unusual ingredients, ridiculously high alcohol by volume (ABV), bizarre names and sometimes unsettling flavors.

West Seattle's own Adem Tepedelen, the author of “The Brewtal Truth Guide to Extreme Beers” which describes and rates more than 100 unusual beers from around the world is coming to West Seattle Dec. 12 for a visit and a beer tasting at the Beer Junction. The book draws parallels to the music scene, with profiles on craft-beer-loving metal musicians and extreme craft beer brewers.

Your Favorite Christmas Gift ?

By Scott Anthony

Remember when you were a kid and you wrote letters to St. Nick, ticking off the toys, the dolls, the bicycles that you desperately wanted in the days before the Jolly Elf made his annual appearance?

I could try to pull a tear from you with a sad story about a little kid who only wants world peace, but truth be told, kids are materialistic little critters, pawns of the television merchandising machine and when they don’t get what they want, you may expect a serious, week long pouting session.

I asked Mrs. Anthony what she wanted and what she got for Christmas gifts as a child and her first answer was, ‘A Raggedy Ann doll.’ I thought that was sort an ordinary gift, but she explained that the doll that ‘Santa’ brought was nearly five feet tall. Now that’s a good memory. How about you? What particular gift did you get for Christmas, and was it what you wanted? I asked a few locals about their experience.

My friend Kraig responded first;

Council adopts legislation restricting detention of immigration detainees

Focus on holding immigrants with serious offenses

The Metropolitan today adopted legislation on how the County will honor requests by the federal government on the detention of immigrants in the King County Jail. The ordinance will continue the County’s effort to detain offenders accused of serious criminal offenses while refusing extended detention for those accused of minor crimes.

“We want law enforcement to focus its resources on the most dangerous individuals in our communities, not the deportation of those whose only offense may be driving with a broken tail light,” said County Council Chair Larry Gossett, the prime sponsor of the ordinance. “We also want all of the people living and working in Martin Luther King, Jr. County to feel safe in their interaction with law enforcement. This ordinance is a positive step in making this a reality.”

“Balancing the importance of public safety with that of personal safety is essential,” said Council Vice Chair Jane Hague. “The amendment I sponsored creates an oversight group to review these policies next year, ensuring this balance.”

Take Two #105: Proper Response to Racist Vandalism

By Kyra-lin Hom

Living in a big city like Seattle or where I am in Chicago, you very quickly become accustomed to graffiti’ed adverts. Billboards, posters and fliers – they all make perfect targets for artistic delinquincy. Particular individuals take their art a step further like the famous UK-based “Banksy.”

Banksy is the pseudonym for a politically active graffiti artist. He views advertisements as attacks on our public space, as abrasive invasions of our mental and emotional territories. And fair enough. We don’t have a choice about the ads we’re forced to see so why not reclaim them for ourselves. His artistic demonstrations are intelligent, subversive, satirical and darkly humorous political and social commentary. Whether you agree with him or not, his pieces are thought provoking, beautiful and enhance the spaces they occupy.
