Prop. 1 getting rally support from politicians and students

Today at Senior Center at 1pm; Monday at noon at South Seattle College

With the future of Metro transit service hanging in the balance, Proposition 1, which would provide funding for buses and road maintenance, if approved in the April 22 election, is getting some rally support.

First is a rally today at 1pm at the West Seattle Senior Center, 4217 S.W. Oregon Street.

In attendance will be King County Executive Dow Constantine, Council Person Joe McDermott, City Of Seattle Councilman Tom Rasmussen, the 34th District Democrats, and the campaign for Move King County Now.

If approved, Proposition 1 would provide dedicated transportation funding available to preserve current Metro transit service levels and provide transportation improvements, including road preservation, safety and maintenance projects, by authorizing the King County Transportation District (KCTD) to levy a 0.1% sales and use tax and a $60 vehicle fee, each for up to ten years. Proposition 1 would also establish a low-income vehicle fee rebate of $20 and provide funding for a low-income Metro transit fare.

Four burglary suspects apprehended with help from King County Air Support

$600 damage done in failed break in attempt

A burglary suspect was apprehended by Seattle Police after they called in air support from King County's Guardian One helicopter in the early morning hours of April 11 in West Seattle.

Police responded to a report of a window being broken and the sound of someone inside a home in the 9000 block of 16th S.W.

The police report states: " Upon arriving Officer Hancock saw several suspects running from the scene in the alleyway being the location. Officer Hancock detained two suspects...in the alley... With the assistance of King County unit Guardian One, Officer Morland and Officer Renner were able to take a third suspect into custody...

I then approached the apartment with Officer Skaar and Officer Gochnour. There were lights on inside the apartment. The window on the south side of the apartment appeared to have a hole broken into it but was secure. The window on the rear of the apartment (north side) appeared to be broken at the bottom. A pole that looked like it had been securing the window had been pushed into the apartment through the hole in the glass. However all windows and doors appeared to be locked.

New Burien Council majority signals change in annexation, Lake Burien policies

By Eric Mathison

Elections do make a difference.

With four new lawmakers, Burien City Council members took April 7 a significant step toward eliminating any renewed attempt by Burien to annex White Center and North Highline.

The previous council majority had beaten back attempts to withdraw Burien’s Potential Annexation Area (PAA) designation for the unincorporated area even after North Highline voters soundly rejected annexation.

Also lawmakers voted to consider pleas from Lake Burien residents to designate their neighborhood as low density residential. Previous council majorities had rejected repeated requests.

Neither policy reversal is a done deal. Council members only voted to place the items on this year’s Comprehensive Plan Amendments docket.

The items will be studied by city staff, debated by the citizens’ advisory Planning Commission as well as lawmakers and commented on by the public at council meetings and hearings.

A final decision is not expected until December.

Local Resident to be “Locked Up For Good”

Burien resident Renatta Emerson is scheduled to be “locked up” on May 14th. Her crime is having a big heart but she won’t be sent to a normal jail. Emerson is being sentenced to the Smith Tower for a jail themed fundraising event for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) called the Lock Up.

Emerson, owner of Immersion Events, is participating in MDA’s premier annual fundraising event to raise funds for life-saving research. Her bail has been set at $3200, which goes to help families in Western Washington who are affected by neuromuscular diseases. If she does not make bail by May 14th, she has agreed to spend the afternoon behind bars (and yes, a striped suit may be involved). You can help her raise bail by visiting www2.mda.org/goto/renattaemerson and making a secure online donation.
