Tattoo Expo attracts inked expressionists from Ballard

Ink-addicts are sure to swoon at an opportunity to show off and celebrate their permanent peregrinations of expression at the Seattle Tattoo Expo.

The expo is set to celebrate its 13th annual event August 15 to 17 at the Fisher Pavilion at the Seattle Center.

“This signature Seattle event is a colorful, loud, fun way to spend one of our beautiful Northwest weekends,” says Gloria Connors, Founder and Producer of the Seattle Tattoo Expo. “We love seeing both the familiar and new faces each year, and can’t wait for another one.”

Ballard’s Slave to the Needle and Rabid Hands will have a few of their artists showing off their skills while tattooing clients.

The event will feature art contests, music and burlesque entertainment. The main attraction is artists showing off their skills. The expo attracts artists from all over the world. Some of this year’s artists include Damon Conklin of Super Genius Tattoo (Seattle, WA); Shawn Barber of Memoir Tattoo (Los Angeles, CA); Big Gus of Big Gus Ink (Hesperia, CA); and Jeff Gogue of Off the Map Tattoo – Northwest (Grants Pass, OR).

Bento Sushi offers cheap delicious eats after 10 years

Seattle holds high standards for sushi. In this city you can encounter places that offer the purist experience at $250 a head or patrons can venture a hole in the wall dive offering “crispy” and “spicy” rolls deluging with sauce.

Bento Sushi (8501 15th Ave N.W.) leans more toward the latter, however, diners should not let that stop them from trying the tasty cheap eats offered.

The sushi menu offers a broad selection of preparations, and prices hang close to $6 for an 8-piece roll. Sauce heavy, Americanized favorites like the Spider, Dragon and the Philly Roll are offered, but Lee switches it up with not so “fishy” rolls like the Beef Teriyaki Roll and Crispy Chicken Roll. More over, Lee said that the Seattle Roll, made with apples, carrots, cucumber and sesame seeds is a house favorite. Staying true to the “hole-in-the-wall village sushi shop” -- as one online reviewer put it – the prices rarely breach $10, making it a perfect stop for lunch. They also have outdoor seating.

Fernwood at the Park residents gives back to the community in a special way

Seniors helping seniors

By: Betty Rose Cortes

Every third or fourth Wednesday of the month, Normandy Park residents at Fernwood at the Park turn their “Fieldtrip Day” into a “Giving Day” by extending a generous gesture to the residents at St. Martin de Porre Men’s Shelter on Alaskan Way in Seattle.

Since June, the senior residents have dedicate their last Wednesday of the month to making 300 sandwiches for the shelter, which provides warm meals, clothing and housing for homeless men 50 and older. For the residents, this is just an added bonus to their already fun-filled Wednesday schedule.

“It is a lot of fun and it went by very quickly,” Fernwood resident Nancy Reddekopp said, “It’s a good time to be social, too.”

Scott Anthony: Motorcycles and Cars

By Scott Anthony

With four police cars and a dedicated sign saying, ‘Accident Investigation’, I knew the accident on Military Road was messy.

I peeled off to take a side road and the detour took me past the other side of the crash scene. In the distance I could see a motorcycle on it’s side and I silently sent out an affirmation for the well being of the rider as I turned off for the house. Mrs. Anthony came home shortly afterwards and together we took the dogs for a walk through the neighborhood. I tugged my dog up a side road and Mrs. A followed with her dog and soon we were at the accident scene again. I snapped a pic to send to my editor and Mrs. A asked a lady bystander what had happened. “Guy on the motorcycle couldn’t stop… I guess… got tangled up with that gold colored car. They airlifted him to Harborview, he was conscious.”

Pathfinder K8 Playground Update: Grant awarded, playground paint party planned

August 21st is the date for the work party to prep the site

The playground updates for Pathfinder K-8 are finally seeing some more momentum. Here's an update provided by Holli Margelli.

"The Pathfinder Playground Revamp was awarded the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Matching Fund large grant. Thanks to the City of Seattle’s Department of Neighborhoods for helping us really get the ball rolling with our new design. Our playground is now 40% funded, and our fundraising team has kicked into gear to help us get the rest of the way there.

August Paint Party:

August 21st the playground is getting a little facelift in preparation for our new design. With a Capital One $4,000 grant for the school, we are having a work party to do projects all over the school–and the playground is one of them. That means we can get started painting the braided stream and adding new features like a labyrinth and accurate US map. The four-squares, hopscotch and old markings will be refreshed too.
