Alsatian Celebration at Bastille Café & Bar

This September, Bastille Café & Bar is celebrating France’s easternmost region of Alsace with five days of classic Alsatian dishes and drinks! From Sunday, September 21 through Thursday, September 25, there will be Alsace-inspired plates available alongside wine flights and beer specials.

Alsace shares both a border and culture with Germany—the cuisine of the region includes many classic German components. Chef Jason Stoneburner will be cooking some of classic dishes like Choucroute Garnie, a hearty platter of knockwurst, bockwurst, smoked pork shank, house bacon, and braised sauerkraut ($19); Escargots à l’Alsacienne with basil-fed escargot, garlic, shallot, cumin, anise, and parsley ($15); Choucroute Poisson, a roasted Rockfish with braised sauerkraut and Riesling sauce ($22); and to finish off dinner, an Alsace Apple Cake ($6).

Wine director and sommelier James Lechner and his team have chosen a handful of distinctive Alsatian wines, which will be available in a flight of three 2.5-oz pours for $14. The region is best known for its wonderful Rieslings and great Gewürztraminers. There will also be beer specials—Alsace is the primary beer-producing region in France!

Mayor proposes Department of Education and Early Learning

As parents ready their kids for the first week of school, Mayor Ed Murray today unveiled his plan to reorganize of the city’s education and support programs into a new Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL), the first of several proposals the mayor will make in his first city budget.

The new structure will enable the city to better coordinate existing work and resources on behalf of students of all ages, improve collaboration with Seattle Public Schools, colleges and child-care providers, and increase performance measurement of the city’s work to support educational outcomes.

“Equity in education is the foundation of our democracy and the future of our city,” said Murray. “The City already supports programs across the continuum from birth through college, but we must do better to align resources for better outcomes for education. We will sharpen our focus on achieving great outcomes for all, so that none of Seattle’s students are left behind. We want Seattle to be the first city in America that eliminates the achievement gap.”

SLIDESHOW: Strong roster, tough schedule set the Wildcats up for an exciting football season

by Paul Moseley

The 2014 West Seattle Wildcats football team has the makings of a party crasher. They start the year with a healthy, more mature varsity squad, a bumper crop of sophomores from last year's freshman team, and one of the toughest schedules for a Metro League public school.

Coming off a rebuilding year, Head Coach Tom Burggraff starts his 2nd season back (he was head coach for 15 years before taking a break) with cautious optimism. "We had a good camp, with 14 scrimmages. There's a lot of excitement and a lot of turn-out. You just don't know until you start playing games".

The investment in the freshman team last year seems to have paid off. "We had a great freshman program [last year]" said Burggraff. "We have about 25 of them coming back". In addition, the Wildcats have a stronger stable of varsity players with experience. They only lost 3 seniors from last year, so most of the starting team is intact. "Last year, we had 61 players in the whole program - Freshman and Varsity. This year, we have about 61 varsity players. I spent all our money on new equipment...we ran out".

Seattle Police precinct desks now open 24 hours a day

Since last summer, the precinct desks of the Seattle Police Department have not been fully staffed. If you've called the precinct (remember for emergencies you should still call 911) to ask a question, follow up with a report, or even just to thank them for their service there were times when you couldn't reach people in the precinct directly.

That's all changed now.

They announced today that all five precinct desks will be fully staffed, 24 hours a day. You can still reach them through 911, but please reserve that for emergency calls.

In West Seattle the police precinct can be found at this address:

Southwest Precinct
2300 S.W. Webster
Seattle, WA 98106
(206) 733-9800

You can check out the precinct locations on the map online and learn more about each precinct here:

information from King County

Acting upon the recommendations of an Ad-Hoc Committee that included three members of the King County Council, County Executive Dow Constantine today sent the Council a proposal for February service changes that would cut 169,000 hours of Metro Transit service. The February service reduction would delete 16 bus routes and revise or reduce 32 others. (Details are available on Metro's website.)

Proposed February 2015 service changes

16 routes deleted: 4, 22, 25, 26, 28, 30, 31, 158, 159, 178, 179, 187, 190, 192, 242, and DART 930.
32 routes revised or reduced: 1, 2, 3, 8, 9X, 12, 13, 14, 16, 21, 24, 26X, 27, 28X, 29, 32, 33, 60, 65, 106, 107, 116X, 121, 125, 157, 168, 177, 181, 193X, 197, 271 and DART 901.
The Council already approved a first round of 151,000 hours of service reductions to take effect Sept. 27. Taken together, the two rounds represent cuts to about 10 percent of Metro’s service, or 320,000 hours of the transit agency’s 3.5 million annual hours. Additional service reductions will be examined as part of King County’s upcoming biennial budget process.

KCHA completes sale of final lots at Seola Gardens near White Center

The King County Housing Authority recently completed the sale of the final 54 homeownership lots at the award-winning Seola Gardens in White Center. The land purchase by a private developer marks the final phase of KCHA’s commitment to rebuild the former public housing complex – previously called Park Lake Homes II- into a vibrant mixed-income, master-planned community.

The lots were purchased by Richmond American Homes, who also developed the first phase of single-family homes at SG.

Construction on the second phase of homes will begin in the first quarter of 2015. The homes will range in size from 1,800 to 2,500 square feet and will be priced in the mid- to uppers $300,000s.

Forty-eight of the 54 homes in the first phase have already been sold; the remaining six are under contract.
