Rams sweep Decatur in cross country

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Mount Rainier's boys and girls cross-country teams improved their records for this season Wednesday, dashing through the 3.2 miles of hills and trails of Celebration Park in Federal Way for a sweep of Decatur.

The Rams won, 40-21, for boys and 30-28 for girls in a South Puget Sound League North Division dual meet in Federal Way.

The Ram boys moved to 2-1 this season while the girls won their first dual this season, going to 1-2.

The girls team ran the closest most competitive race, as the final team score attests, two points, and head coach Brian Jacobsen, talking to his team afterward, explained the importance of all five runners coming in at the top.

"The boys won by a 40-21 score, so good job there, and the girls showed why all five runners matter, winning, 30-28. So, it was close," said Jacobsen, with the large 30-something group of runners seated on a side hill, just off the finish line area of the race. "So, good job by our girls and boys teams."

Evergreen edges out the Highline Pirates 22-21 in close battle

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Evergreen scored late in the second quarter to take the lead, made three crucial stops on Highline possessions on fourth down in the fourth quarter, and experienced success on two key two-point conversion plays, adding up to an exciting 22-21 win over the Pirates for the Wolverines' homecoming game at Highline Memorial Field Friday.

"Hats off to Highine, they did a great job," said Wolverines coach Jim Wright. "That was a playoff atmosphere, a lot of fun."

Both teams played with a lot of competitive fire on offense and defense, making the Wolverines' and Pirates' fans with plenty of occasions to cheer on their teams in this game.

Evergreen struck first in the game in the first quarter, for a touchdown.

But it wasn't easy getting past the Pirates' defense as linebackers Sam Houghtby and AJ Sailiai, defensive back Montae Rainwater and defensive line guys like Isaac Faletogo made the Wolverines' players -- mostly running the ball -- earn every yard they gained.

SLIDESHOW: Chief Sealth rolls over Franklin 47-6

by Paul Moseley

Chief Sealth fans had a reason to celebrate friday night. It was homecoming, the band was awesome, and they crushed the visiting Franklin Quakers 47-6.

The Seahawks came into the game with a proven ability to put points on the board but have struggled to put 4 quarters of offense and defense together. Tonight, it all came together, and the Chief Sealth defense won the game for them in the first quarter.

On their first possession, the Seahawks relied on their steam engine Daron Camacho to get the offense moving. Camacho rushed the ball about 50 yards on his first three carries putting Chief Sealth on the Quaker 5 yard line. The Seahawks fumbled the ball away, but got it back two plays later when defensive back Antonio Chiles recovered a Franklin fumble in the end zone putting them up 7-0.
