Holman Road NW Striping Rescheduled to Oct. 6 and 7

The Seattle Department of Transportation will install the last portion of striping for the Holman Road NW Paving Project early next week. This work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6 and Tuesday, Oct. 7.

During this time, one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction of Holman Road Northwest between Northwest 87th Street and 8th Avenue Northwest. Crews will first close the center lanes of Holman Road and direct traffic to the outer lanes. Once striping is complete in the center lanes, the outer lanes will then be closed for striping, and traffic will be directed to the center lanes.
This work is weather dependent. Local bus access will be maintained at Seventh Avenue Northwest for King County Metro’s Route 28 and RapidRide D Line. For information on bus service, look for Rider Alert notices at bus stops, see Metro Online at http://metro.kingcounty.gov/alerts/, or call 206.553.3000.

After striping is complete, crews will work on remaining electrical and landscape work. The project will be substantially complete by the end of October.

Come see how to install a rain garden at free event Oct. 11

The RainWise Program is connecting rain garden contractors to homeowners in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood of Seattle

Seattle residents who are interested installing rain gardens or cisterns can meet with contractors at a free event Oct. 11 in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood of Seattle.

The RainWise Program offers eligible Seattle homeowners rebates that could cover up to 100 percent of the cost to install a rain garden or cistern.

Rain gardens are more than just beautiful to look at; they help solve one of the largest sources of pollution for Puget Sound by naturally cleaning and controlling stormwater. Cisterns are large rain barrels that collect runoff from rooftops, which homeowners can use for watering yards and landscaping.

The free RainWise "Meet the Contractor" Fair takes place on Oct. 11 from1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Phinney Neighborhood Association, 6532 Phinney Ave. N., Seattle (lower building on Dayton Ave., basement level).

The RainWise program will also host workshops in north Seattle workshops on Oct. 20 and 30. The 90-minute events will offer an orientation to the program, and will feature local homeowners who have completed the rebate process as well as RainWise contractors. To register go to www.tinyurl.com/RainWise.

Cindi Barker and Emergency Communication Hubs honored by County Executive Constantine

King County Executive Dow Constantine came to West Seattle on Oct. 2 to honor Cindi Barker and the Emergency Communication Hubs that serve communities from Ballard to West Seattle and beyond.

"Disasters happen on an ongoing basis," Constantine said, "and we want to be prepared to do our part for our community." He noted that in emergencies, often the "first, first responders are your neighbors, and that's why I'm pleased to recognize the Seattle Emergency Communications Hubs, an enthusiastic group of volunteers who support quick response and robust communication through emergencies."

The Executive pointed out that a lot of his job is going through emergency preparedness work."In all of that it is constantly clear that one of the most important things is to have people in the neighborhoods where they will immediately begin to help neighbors and community members, to keep things calm an orderly, to help provide access to services as they are needed. And it's very, very reassuring to know that the Emergency Communication Hubs are in place. This is something that happened because we saw a problem and decided to solve it."

SLIDESHOW: Construction crane at 3922 SW Alaska comes down

The construction crane located at 3922 SW Alaska St is finally being taken apart after being installed 16 months ago. The site will host more than 200 apartments and an LA Fitness on the bottom floor. The entire process will last about a day and a half.

Most people from around the area know the site formerly called "The Hole", nicknamed because it was dug out by excavators back in 2008 and then sat idle until new ownership came along last year. The property is now called "Spruce".

The property was auctioned off back in October 2011, three years after the development stalled. The winning bidder Madison Development Group won it for $32 million dollars.

Fennel: A Love-Hate Relationship

by Chef Jeremy Mclachlan

My love and hate relationship for fennel is more on the love side than the hate. Fennel makes me smile by the amazing ways I can use it but it can make me cry the way it takes over my garden and keeps growing and growing and growing!

Fennel is an amazing versatile vegetable because you can use it in four different ways. Way one is the traditional use in salads, sautés and braised with mussels. Next is the spice derived from the seeds and used in Italian sausage and sauces or ground and made into a licorice-flavored salt. Third use is the fronds of this vegetable can be used as a fresh herb flavoring sauces, tossed in salads or to kick up smoked salmon. Last but not least is the hard-to-find pungent pollen that casts an amazing mouth-numbing anise flavor.

When planting this never-ending vegetable make sure you lock it up tight like a caged beast.

Take Two #141: Male Bonding in The Maze Runner

By Kyra-lin Hom

The Maze Runner (2014) is the newest YA (young adult) book-to-screen adaptation to try for the big leagues. This first movie, just opened in theaters, is based on the first book of James Dashner's trilogy+prequel bearing the same name. It's a dystopian, post-apocalyptic, Lord of the Flies-style adventure story wherein memory-wiped teenage boys are dropped in the center of a massive Lovecraftian maze with no explanation and have to survive.

Unlike my approach to the Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent, Percy Jackson, etc. franchises, I accidentally stumbled across this one and know almost nothing about the books. Coming in blind has given me a fresh perspective.

Frustrations with the movie first. The days of the stand-alone film adaptation are gone. Though I did enjoy the film despite some epically bad dialogue, the in-movie realization that this was but part one of (at least) three was frustrating. The end was vaguely unsatisfying for movie goers and obviously in place to tease those who knew the books.
