Police blotter week of 11-10-14

By Tim Clifford

Armed burglars leave message for “Tommy”
Shortly after 6 p.m. on Nov.4 police received a report of a home invasion robbery involving two masked suspects with guns. When police arrived at the residence on the 9000 block of 8 Ave. S.W. the victims reported that the suspects had fled eastbound through a nearby alleyway. An area search with K-9 units and air support yielded negative results.

The two female victims explained to the officers that they had been in the basement of the home doing crafts when they heard a loud banging from upstairs. Going to investigate the noise the two victims ran into two masked men with guns in the hallway. One of the suspects told the women “I’m not going to harm you; we are just here for the weed” while the other suspect gathered items from numerous rooms into a bag. The victims tried to explain to the suspects that they had no idea what “weed” they were talking about and that they had the wrong house.

Take Two #146: News for the Goldfish Generation

By Kyra-lin Hom

Jumping into the middle of a good story is difficult. The main characters have already been introduced. The premise has already been laid out. Usually most of the rules of the world have already been established. And it gets harder the more complex the story. So tell me, why do we treat the events of the real world – as complicated and nuanced as stories get – like stand-alone chapters?

For convenience sake, current events have become a quick series of latest news blurbs, quick info splashes with limited context. This style works well for 'meatless' announcements. For example, believe it or not one of the 'top stories' on my droid's news feed was the potential casting of Benedict Cumberbatch as Marvel Comic's live version of Dr. Strange. And...yup. That's pretty much all you need to know about that story. If you don't know what any of that means, trust me, you don't care.

SLIDESHOW: West Seattle rallies in tough loss to Highline

by Paul Moseley

The West Seattle Wildcats took on the Highline Pirates at SWAC saturday evening to close out the regular season. The Pirates took home a 20-14 win in a game that kept the crowd in it to the final seconds.

Highline struck first in the second quarter. After several back and forth possessions, Highline Quarterback Kyle Tief connected with receiver AG Sailiai for a 40 yard touchdown pass that put the Pirates up 7-0. On West Seattle’s next possession, the Wildcats got into the game with beautiful drive. They kicked the drive off with a 20 yard screen pass from Quarterback Carter Golgart to John Ursino, then handed it to Rico Saeteurn for another first down run. A few plays later, Golgart connected again with Ursino for a 25 yard touchdown and it was 7-7 with 5:13 left in the half.

The Pirates answered back with 43 seconds left in the half. It was Tief to Sailiai again for a 30 yard reception and Highline went into half-time with a 14-7 lead.

Chief Sealth finishes "inspirational" season

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

After Chief Sealth got stung with a 28-6 loss by the White River Hornets in a non-league football season finale Friday the Seahawks finished with a 3-7 record in full games played this year.

They wound up at 4-8 overall including a split of two mini games in a three-way Metro League tiebreaker playoff.

Simon Iniguez was happy with the finish after he took over as head coach when Luther Carr stepped down right before the season.

"I thought it was a very inspirational season for what this team has gone through," Iniguez said. "The adversity of losing your leader at the beginning of the season has an impact psychologically. I thought considering the conditions they played great."

Iniguez plans on returning next fall.

"Hopefully I'll get done with my Masters Degree and be ready to go," he said.
Iniguez was impressed with a turnout of 80 players this year and feels that bodes well for the future.
"The program is growing," he said.

The down side is that Chief Sealth will lose 25 seniors to graduation.

Elvino Naccarato and his wife Ruth have lived on Beach Drive in West Seattle since 1965 but over time their home got to be too much to keep up with. The home fell into disrepair and then, Ruth suffered a stroke and had go to a full time care facility. Now 9, taking care of what was required was beyond his abilities both physically and financially.

The home remodeling division of Andersen Windows called Renewal by Andersen teamed up with Rebuilding Together Seattle ® – a nonprofit that brings volunteers together with their communities to help low income homeowners in need and came to Elvino's aid.

Elvino is a WWII vet who served in the Italian campaign. Following his discharge he worked as a mail carrier before retirement.

SLIDESHOW: White River Hornets defeat Sealth Seahawks 28 – 6

by Lawrence Kane

The White River Hornets made the trek from Buckley to West Seattle to face the Chief Sealth Seahawks at the Southwest Athletic Center on Friday night. Unfortunately the visitors proved too much for the hometown Seahawks to handle, winning 28 – 6. The score could have been much closer, but a 51-yard touchdown run by junior running back Daron Camacho (#11) was call back due to a holding penalty, senior wide receiver Alloney Burris (#5) caught a pass in the end-zone inches out of bounds, and a near-certain touchdown by senior wide receiver Ronnie Parker (#10) was thwarted when he was stripped of the ball on the 1-foot line.

Despite these heartbreaking moments the Seahawks played tough throughout the entire game.
