Evergreen girls hold off Auburn in non-league battle

By Gerardo Bolong
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

AUBURN - Seamount League 2A Evergreen used suffocating defense to build a huge lead and stave off third quarter challenges to post a non league 63-53 girls basketball win at SPSL 3A Auburn on Mon., Dec. 22.
The Wolverines are in 5-0 Seamount first place tie with Kennedy Catholic and now stand at 6-1 overall. Auburn's overall record is 2-4.

"The team is learning and we have great bench support," said Evergreen head coach Natasha Hicks McCray, who was a standout athlete in her Auburn High School days. "Everyone played a role for us."
In the first quarter, the Evergreen defensive pressure yielded a multitude of steals that combined with efficient ball movement for a 14-0 scoring run and a 20-7 Wolverine lead with less than two minutes left. Marleisha Cox was pushing up 12 points in the quarter on the way to 15 first half points.

At Large in Ballard: In The Spirit

By Peggy Sturdivant

Just think how many people stop the intersection of Market and 24th Avenue every day, waiting at the long traffic signal, by car or on foot. Even before the seven-story apartment building enveloped the Spirit gas station on the northwest corner, it seemed mysterious.

When I finally ventured into the service station for the first time last week Harold Hezel told me that people either know him as a nice guy, or think there’s an ogre holed up in that corner and the service station is a drug front. Those people definitely don’t know him. After a few hours I realized I’d met one of those hidden heroes in Ballard–hidden in plain sight.

To walk past the one island of gas pumps, past the collection of older cars along the side and into the office is to learn that Harold Hezel is a product of an earlier time in Ballard, and of the American tradition of service stations. Or as Ballard Oil’s Warren Aakervik thinks to himself every day when he drives by the Spirit Station, “It’s Scotty.”

Saints' boys basketball team wins Xavier Turner style over Crusaders

by Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Styling in every way one can in a basketball game, the Seattle Lutheran Saints' junior, captain, 6-2 guard, Xavier Turner, put up 29 points to lead his team to a 68-49 win over the visiting Tacoma Baptist Crusaders on Monday.

The Saints improved to 5-2 this season, with still having a first league game to be played, with that action starting at home against visiting Shoreline Christian on Jan. 3.

"Xavier played really well," said Saints' coach, Brett Kapels. "And, the boys played really well together. Defense is improving."

For Saints' girls b-ball, one quarter was killer in Crusaders' win

by Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

There was a desire to win and a lead, early on, to support that desire, for the Seattle Lutheran girls basketball team, but a six-point lead midway through the second quarter for the Saints, crumbled, via a murderous third quarter of scoring for the foe, as, Tacoma Baptist came back to win, 51-29, on Monday.
The Saints dropped to 1-5 overall, but, 0-0 in the SeaTac B division, having yet to play a league game, with their first one of those against visiting Shoreline Christian on Jan. 3. Tacoma Baptist improved to 4-2, overall, this season, and, were 1-0 in it's division entering this non-league game versus the Saints.
The Saints' coach, Bruce Carlson, really didn't need to say too many words about this one, for in this game a picture could tell a thousand words. He used two time-outs in the second quarter to try and stop the bleeding, raising his hands in the air toward the Saints' girls on his team, all standing, in the huddle, watching. He was demonstrating what can only be said something like this: "Defense. Get your hands up when they are taking shots."

Concrete pour at Murray Basin CSO rescheduled for Dec. 30

information from King County

Concrete pours scheduled to begin this week have been postponed. King County contractors have tentatively rescheduled the first pour for the facility’s underground storage tank for Tuesday, December 30.

A second pour is planned for early January 2015.

No work is planned for Thursday, December 25. Crews will work on Friday, December 26 and Saturday, December 27 to maintain secant piles and place rebar. Schedule updates will be provided as necessary.

On pour days, about 10 trucks an hour will deliver 2,000 cubic yards of concrete to the site — less than half the amount delivered for the base slab pours in early December. The site will look as it did during those earlier pours. Concrete will be delivered to the site between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Two concrete pump trucks on the east side of the 7000 block of Beach Dr. S.W. will pump concrete into the hole. Crews may continue working in the tank area after 6 p.m. if necessary. Traffic delays and congestion can be expected near the project area on pour days.

What to expect during concrete pours:
• Work hours between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on:
