Vancouver, here we come.

Four straight wins for West Seattle paid off in a trip to the Fort Vancouver Little League complex for the state age 10-11 all-star Little League baseball tournament that opens Saturday, July 18.

The Westsiders capped off their District 7 tournament stay with an 18-6 victory over Seattle Central on Monday on the heels of victories over PacWest, South Highline National and Renton.

"It was a whirlwind tournament for us," said West Seattle manager Isaiah Brent, whose team also went to state at the age 9-10 level last year. "This team is poised and ready to do some damage. It's fun to coach them."
It was also the second year in a row that Brent's team faced Seattle Central in the District 7 final.
"Seattle is a really good team," Brent said. "They're definitely a league on the rise to watch out for for some time to come. They've got some good players coming up."

Seattle Central was looking for the first ever District 7 title and state tournament berth for its charter, but it was West Seattle that prevailed Monday.

Duwamish Tribe responds to federal govt. denial of recognition; Press conference set for Wednesday

After decades of attempting to get recognition as a legitimate native American tribe, the Duwamish were denied, in what was called a "final" decision by the Dept. of the Interior on July 2. The tribe plans a formal press conference on Wednesday to address the issue but today released a statement in response to the decision. The press event will be at 10:00 a.m.
at the Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center, 4705 W Marginal Way SW.

Duwamish Tribe response:

"Chief Seattle’s Duwamish Tribe has never abandoned its tribal relations. We are the Duwamish Tribe that signed the Point Elliot Treaty. We will continue to fight on.

There is ample precedence for the federal recognition of Point Elliot Treaty historic tribes in addition to the reservations--the historic Upper Skagit, Sauk-Suiattle, Stillaguamish, Samish and Snoqualmie Tribes have all been acknowledged since the 1970’s.

Little League
The road to Williamsport by way of Woodinville and San Bernardino starts Wednesday and maybe Thursday for either West Seattle or PacWest.
The two teams will play for the District 7 Major Little League (age 11-12) title at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the PacWest complex between Burien and SeaTac off Des Moines Way.
West Seattle hopes to get the issue over with that day with a win, while PacWest will be trying to force a second game for the state berth in Woodinville at 6 p.m. Thursday.
State starts July 25 for the winner, and from there the team would need to win the state title to get to Western Regionals in San Bernardino. The team would then need to win regionals to get to the World Series in Williamsport, Penn.
Meanwhile, the District 7 champion West Seattle Intermediate (50 foot away mound and 70 foot basepaths) team will open its state tournament Sunday at 12 p.m. at the South Kitsap West complex.
West Seattle will be awaiting its opponent as it has a first round bye.

Police blotter week of 7-6-15

By Tim Clifford

Cut to the punch
On June 30 two people were robbed by a gang of thieves on 17th Ave. S.W. as they were walking. No description or details about the suspects were included in the police report.

Around 11 p.m. the two victims, a male and a female, were walking towards a home located on 17th Ave. S.W. when a group of male suspects approached them from behind. One of the suspects approached the victims with a pistol out and said “give me everything you’ve got”. The male victim complied and began handing over his wallet, cell phone, and a daypack.

One of the other suspects approached the female victim saying “I’m gonna take your purse”. The female victim then pushed the suspect away which began a short shoving match between the two of them. Ultimately the victim gave up her purse.

Burien’s off-leash dog park plans are rolling, rolling, rolling

By Eric Mathison

It looks like Burien’s dogs will get their off-leash park a lot earlier than expected, thanks to the hard work of volunteers and the generosity of dog-loving businesses and individuals.

The Burien City Council is scheduled July 20 to discuss rearranging budget items to allow construction of the off-leash facility at Lakeview Park to begin this year instead of 2017.

When the city’s biennial budget was passed no one expected fundraising for the dog park to be so successful so fast. Raising funds for a worthy cause can be like trying to move a giant boulder up a hill. It’s terribly hard to get it rolling.

The park is located on land owned by the Highline School District at Southwest 160th Street and 6th Avenue Southwest. The off-leash facility will be on the upper part of the parcel. LAStudio LLC, a local architectural firm, donated the initial design work.
