New public private partnership at South Seattle College will train students for industry

information from South Seattle College

Since graduating from high school a few years ago, Chantz Hegemann has worked odd jobs here and there, but nearly all of them have left him wanting more.

Hegemann found what he was looking for in a new seven-quarter program at South Seattle College that is a public-private partnership to train heavy diesel repair technicians and starts Fall Quarter of 2015. The program was created to satisfy the industry’s growing need to hire employees with these skills.

South’s Diesel and Heavy Equipment program was in talks with some of the other companies to do similar work for them. Dean Duncan Burgess came up with the idea to join these companies to go into this project together.

A Diesel Industry Sector Cohort, or DISC as the program is being called, provides students with a foundation of skills needed to enter into the diesel technician profession under the guidance of South’s Heavy Diesel program. Employers from the private sector sponsor a student of their choosing with an eye towards employment during (and at the completion of) the program.

Yay! for ArtsWest’s American Idiot

By Amanda Knox

ArtsWest Theatre’s latest production, Green Day’s American Idiot, is so ambitious it’s hard to know where to start to describe it.

Ninety percent of the theatre facility is actively in use. Seventy members comprise the cast and crew. With a full house, there are 180 audience members, sixty of which are split up into three immersive tracts herded through a stage comprised of main floor, scaffolding, traveling staircase, trap doors, underground rooms, and back hallways.

The organization that went into this production is impressive. Stunning, even, considering that Mat Wright’s cabaret series ran all summer and the production team had full access to the performance space for only a few weeks prior to opening night. In true punk-rock spirit, the production team, directed by Eric Ankrim, brought together the biggest show possible with lots of small parts and under the most pressure.

35th Avenue SW and SW Roxbury Street Road Safety Corridor Project moving forward

information from SDOT

Addressing concerns raised by residents, Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) crews are moving forward with in-street work to improve roadway safety on SW Roxbury Street and 35th Avenue SW. To make the roads safer for all users, SDOT crews are modifying current pavement markings and adding new 30 m.p.h. speed limit signs.

This work is part of the 35th Avenue SW and SW Roxbury Street Road Safety Corridor Project, which aims to make streets safer and more accessible for everyone. Using proven methods to lower vehicular speeds and reduce collisions, the on-street changes will feature one travel lane in each direction, a center turn lane to accommodate left turning vehicles and new transit lanes. Residents will also see longer signal cycles for pedestrians and vehicles, along with new transit signal systems and signs.

“At our community meetings this summer, residents were vocal in their support for safer streets in West Seattle,” said Mayor Ed Murray. “We are reducing speeds and changing lane configurations to make us all safer – drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.”

After two burglaries, Cafe Osita sees groundswell of support

"It's a great place to have bad things happen to you" said Andrea Ramirez, owner of Cafe Osita on 35th Ave SW. The cafe has been broken into twice in recent weeks but the response from the community has been impressive.

Last June the Cafe, at 7349 35th SW, was broken into resulting in a loss of $1200. Then this past Thursday the cafe was burglarized again but, "In this case they didn't get any cash so it's more like $700 to $800, " said Ramirez.

The criminals broke through the glass front door both times, in the very early morning hours.

But following the most recent break in, neighbors have been coming forward and not only recognizing the cafe as a community asset, offering many ideas on how to help but making cash donations, over tipping and lots of support for the small business. There's even a fund raising page set up on CrowdRise.com for that purpose if you'd like to donate to help them recover some of their losses.

They are making changes both internally and externally to improve security from cameras to better locks and other measures.

Citizen’s arrest made on fugitive sex offender in White Center

By Tim Clifford

Friday, Aug. 28, proved to be a very bad day for 24-year-old Demarcus Linwood. Sgt. Stan Seo with the King County Sheriff’s Office tweeted out at 11:24 a.m. that day “citizen arrested Demarcus Linwood in White Center this morning then called KCSO. Saw fugitive on Washington’s Most Wanted”.
Linwood, nicknamed “Charm”, is a level 3 sex offender and between Aug. 25 and Aug. 28 was a fugitive from the law. After pleading guilty to failing to register as a sex offender Linwood was granted release to attend a funeral. He never showed to his next court date after that and apparently went into hiding.
A citizen who watches Washington’s Most Wanted recognized Linwood in White Center and apprehended the sex offender. After restraining him this good Samaritan called the King County Sheriff’s Office and turned Linwood in.

At the time of his arrest Linwood was facing 43 months for the failure to register charge and an additional 43 months for a rape that he plead guilty to. Linwood has been in trouble with the law since he was 14 and his other offenses include attempted robbery, criminal trespass and multiple assault convictions.

Dance lessons

By Amanda Knox

The first dance lessons I ever took were swing dance lessons in middle school. At the time, Explorer West was still a tiny, start-up, independent middle school that rented out the caboose-end of the then Westside Elementary School building. Our class numbered an intimate fifteen, almost evenly divided between male (seven) and female (eight). Now, as an adult, I wonder how gleefully conniving it must have been for our first-name-basis teachers to decide to suddenly introduce awkward hand-holding and bunny-hopping into the curriculum.

“It’s not that we didn’t want to dance,” Colin astutely recalls. “It’s that we weren’t willing to.”

Fast forward and you’ll find me at a loss at high school homecomings, tolos, prom…Without regular access to the choreography of, say, MTV music videos, I sang along more than danced along to the DJ’s rehashing of KUBE 93’s afternoon line-up, and limped away in the bunion-bruising black heels I had bought at Payless for the occasion.
