Pat's View: Bartman Remembered

By Pat Cashman

Once again for Mariner fans, the baseball playoffs have arrived---and Seattle is right in the thick of…watching it…on TV. So let’s bring up the name of a non-Northwesterner.

If you don’t remember the name Steve Bartman---then you’ve made Steve Bartman a very happy man. But Chicago Cub fans will never forget Bartman. Ever.

Even if Cubs should somehow make their way to the World Series in coming days, the pitiable wretch Bartman is no more likely to be forgiven than Hitler. After all, it was Bartman---not Hitler---who inadvertently deflected a foul ball in game 6 of the National League championship series in 2003---and immediately became a pariah in the windy city.

In a town where fun guys like Al Capone and John Dillinger used to hold sway---Steve Bartman may still be considered the more odious criminal by thousands of Cub fans.

This is the city where heads were knocked in---out in the streets during the 1968 democratic convention. It prompted Mayor Daley to famously say: “The police aren’t out there causing disorder. The police are out there to preserve disorder.”

School Daze 'Pop Up Museum' this Friday at The Kenney

The Southwest Seattle Historical Society is teaming up with The Kenney to present School Daze Pop-Up Museum, a FREE exhibit and reception at 2-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, in the lobby of The Kenney, 7125 Fauntleroy Way S.W.

What is a Pop-Up Museum? It’s similar to the Antiques Roadshow. Essentially, it’s showing your stuff and telling your stories for an afternoon.

Items from the collection of their “Birthplace of Seattle” Log House Museum as well as those from residents and members of the public will be featured.

Anyone is welcome to bring a photo or object related to the theme of “school,” but doing so is not required. You could bring a yearbook, report card, photo, letter sweater or ??? The point is to share stories and socialize.
Stories sure to be told include the romantic tale of a teacher exchange between Gatewood Elementary and a school in England resulting in two marriages.

Collections items will include dramatic photos of how the spring-vacation 1949 earthquake devastated Lafayette Elementary School, forcing it to be rebuilt.

Citizens gather at street-park for life sized Scrabble game

Over 50 citizens gathered at the 17th Avenue NW and NW Dock Place last Saturday Oct. 10 for a life-size Street Scrabble tournament and to provide feedback on the uses of the space, which will one day be a park.

Groundswell Northwest, Ballard Greenways and the Seattle Department of Transportation hosted the event.

The intersection was recently reconfigured in the making of the new Greenway running on 17th Avenue NW. There are plans for the space to be a park under SDOT’s Pavement to Parks Program. The program aims to create community-driven public spaces in underutilized street spaces.

Part of the feedback gathered was regarded what the park will look like. Local artists have already proposed mural ideas for an interim look. The Pavement to Parks programs will fund the interim effort. Meanwhile, a $90,000 Neighborhood Park and Street Fund grant was awarded to Groundswell NW, which will go toward constructing the defining and permanent look of the park.

David Folweiler, a board member of Groundswell NW was at the event.

“The tournament is really being held to promote the turning of this pavement into a park,” said Folweiler.

Concrete work finished on Murray Basin CSO storage tank; Project aiming at completion by Spring

information from King County

King County’s contractor finished the concrete work for the Murray CSO Control facility’s one million gallon underground storage tank. Building the storage tank required some of the most intense activity on the project. King County and its contractor deeply appreciate the community’s patience while crews built the tank.

The facility building will have three rooms to house mechanical and electrical equipment. It was designed to follow the slope of Lincoln Park Way S.W. behind it. The building will be 20 feet tall at its highest point. Construction of the facility building will continue into Spring 2016.

Work to connect the underground storage tank to the Murray Pump Station will continue while the building is constructed. This work will increase congestion and cause traffic delays of up to 15 minutes and parking restrictions on the 7000 block of Beach Dr. S.W. Please stay safe. Follow the directions of flaggers and signs when near the site.

What to expect:
Work on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday work from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
