Resurrection Motorcycle Club denies affiliation of Tukwila shooting suspect

The Highline Times was contacted by the Meyers & Fox, P.L.L.C. on behalf of the Resurrection Motorcycle Club concerning a shooting incident that occurred on Aug.27 in Tukwila. The incident was not only notable for the brazen gunfire directed at police officers but also for the mugshot of the main suspect, Kevin M. Vaughn. The 26-year-old Vaughn has the word “Hatred” tattooed across his forehead.

At the time of the incident it was noted that Vaughn was believed to be involved with the Resurrection Motorcycle Club. Speaking on behalf of the Resurrection club Michael David Meyers of Meyers & Fox reached out to the Highline Times to clarify that Vaughn has no association with the club whatsoever and that in fact some of their members may actually be victims of his auto theft operation.

Superintendent Listening Tour set for Ballard Oct. 14 and Loyal Heights Oct. 27

Dear Community Member,

My name is Jesús Aguirre, and I am delighted to introduce myself as the Superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation.

My family and I relocated to Seattle from Washington DC, and we are thrilled to make the Emerald City our new home.

In Washington DC, I had the opportunity to serve the city through my work in education, both in the local school district as well as serving as the State Superintendent of Education for the District of Columbia. I also managed DC’s department of parks and recreation for almost four years. I am excited to bring my experiences and perspective to help Seattle Parks and Recreation continue its excellent work and positive trajectory.

I have been focused on getting to know Seattle Parks and Recreation, our parks and facilities, and the city’s neighborhoods and people. One of my main priorities is to get to know you better – our stakeholders, customers and residents.

Artist Exhibit and Reception Thursday, 8 October 2015

The Normandy Park Arts Commission Presents Artwork of Giel Ahn
Reception on October 8th, 2015, 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

The Normandy Park Arts Commission is pleased to present an exhibit showcasing the colorful paintings of Giel Ahn, in Normandy Park City Hall Council Chambers during October, 2015.

Giel Ahn, an autistic young man, expresses himself beautifully through striking and powerful contemporary paintings. Bold brush strokes, carefully chosen color placement in combination with an overall interesting and evocative design, his work catches the viewer’s attention. Giel Ahn works in acrylics using a vivid color palette whether he chooses a realistic or an abstract design. Even though they are but his voice from within, Giel’s artworks speak ‘loudly’ and convey his feelings, his emotions, and his joy for life. Unspoken words become language once this young artist picks up a canvas, a brush, and paint.

Good for you! It's Squashtober!

By Kathryn Kingen

Cheeks are getting rosy, there is crispness in the air, and our eyes are being dazzled by the colors of the season. Yes, fall fans, Squashtober has arrived. Let’s hear it for some of the last local produce of the season, the totally underrated, utterly awesome squashes. I have to admit I get excited when I see giant bins piled with pumpkins, acorns, butternuts, and delicatas arrive at my grocer. To me squash is like a warm cozy vegetable sweater that makes me glad that fall is here.

Businesses at 35th SW and Henderson not closed! Just remodeling

If you've driven past the spot near the corner of 35th and Henderson Street SW lately you might think something is wrong. The businesses there have been asked:

Are you still open?
Did you have a fire?
Did you go out of business?

And the answer is no.

The building changed hands in June and the new owner chose to remake the front facade of the building and upgrade the windows. Then it was discovered the behind the stucco exterior there was some dry rot so that had to be addressed, which led to delays in getting the work done..

They did have to close for about 2 weeks but now The Ripple Cafe, West Seattle Fish and Chips and Stuffed Cakes are open every day.

The work is expected to be complete in a week to ten days.

Come play, watch or comment at Ballard Street Scrabble Tournament

A life-size Street Scrabble tournament will take place in Ballard this Saturday, Oct. 10, 4 to 6 p.m. hosted by Groundswell Northwest, Ballard Greenways, and the Seattle Department of Transportation. You can watch the action, provide feedback on this kind of use of public space, or take part in the tournament—at the intersection of 17th Avenue Northwest and Northwest Dock Place.

The intersection was recently reconfigured, leaving a large area of open space along 17th Avenue Northwest. SDOT’s Pavement to Parks Program works to create community-driven public spaces in underutilized street space, like this one in Ballard.

Local artists have submitted several mural ideas for an interim look to define the space. Pavement to Parks will fund that initial effort. Groundswell NW has been awarded a $90,000 Neighborhood Park and Street Fund grant to fund a permanent treatment for the intersection.

If you want to compete in the Scrabble tournament, email StreetScrabble@seattle.gov with your name and contact information. On the day of the event, 16 names will be randomly drawn and participants paired into teams.
