Mobile art show is a dream realized for West Seattle couple

By Lindsay Peyton

West Seattle residents Brenda and Tim Scallon have cast aside the notion that art should be contained within stuffy gallery walls.

The couple took painting on the road – creating a mobile museum out of an Airstream-trailer. They had their first exhibit in the “Caravan Gallery” in 2011 – and have hosted two to four roaming shows a year since then.

The Scallons have now moved on to their next endeavor, recently completing construction on an art and music incubator. Dubbed the ProletariYacht Club, the venue is located in the Building, a studio complex at 4316 SW Othello St.

There’s room inside for classes, events, concerts, screenings, readings and art openings. The couple has installed a stage and rolling exhibition walls. There’s also a music lab, wood workshop and sewing area.

“We want to open this space up to the community, and we want people to explore as many creative activities as they can,” Tim said. “We’ve just begun testing out different ideas. During the next year, we want to build up programming and invite people to participate.”

Take WSTC's survey on the potential for light rail in West Seattle

The West Seattle Transportation Coalition is seeking public input regarding the potential for light rail coming to West Seattle. They have assembled a survey they will take the output of and present it to the Sound Transit Board. The vote on Sound Transit 3 is coming up in November.

In November 2016, we will be asked to vote on “Sound Transit 3,” also called “ST3”. This vote will help shape the future of light rail to the peninsula. On December 4th, 2015, Sound Transit presented various options to the Sound Transit Board.

Take the survey:

The ST3 Central section options include light rail from downtown to West Seattle and a line from the junction to the Burien Transit Center.

NPSL returns as Seamount League folds

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

It is the rebirth of one era and the end of another.

The North Puget Sound League is returning to the local high school scene for the first time since it folded following the 1998-99 school year, but now the Seamount League is set to disappear.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has set the state's school classifications for four years starting this fall and that triggered the changes.

Kennedy Catholic and Mount Rainier are both among the 16 members of the new NPSL, with Kennedy moving up from the Seamount League along with Hazen and Mount Rainier moving over from the South Puget Sound League.

The NPSL will be a Class 4A league in King County, while the 4A SPSL teams are beyond the Pierce County line.

At the WIAA's announced net enrollment of 639.88, Kennedy is actually small enough to be a 2A school but instead "opted up" so it could join the 4A league. Kennedy was a 3A team along with Hazen in the mostly 2A Seamount League last year.

Mount Rainier is opting up from 3A with its net enrollment of 1,252.51 below the 1,343.29 line for 4A.

Ballard Crime Watch: Suspect breaks into house, takes nothing

Backdoor man takes tools, leaves raincoat

A man is missing tools after his garage on the 400 block of N.W. 42nd Street was burglarized on Jan. 22. The complainant told police that the day before he reported the burglary he witnessed a white male in his 20s walk through his yard. The complainant heard the suspect try and open the back door to his home. When he went to investigate he saw the man walking toward his garage. The complainant did not want to confront the man. The next day the complainant checked his garage and noticed a window had been broken. There was a yellow raincoat over the glass. The complainant believed the suspect covered his hand with the coat and punched the window. Tools and miscellaneous items were taken from the garage. Police were unable to recover any fingerprints.

Man wounded in supposed Burien shootout
Deputies from the King County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of two men shooting at each other in Burien to find one man injured and reports of a second man fleeing the scene. Early reports claimed the shooting took place near the intersection of 2nd Avenue S.W. and S.W. 130th Street just before noon on Jan. 25.
Witnesses told police that the 29-year-old man left on the scene was going door to door asking for help after being shot once in each leg. Witnesses also told police that they saw a small late model possible black Honda Civic fleeing the scene.
After interviewing witnesses, police were unable to find evidence that the shooting actually took place on the scene. Some witnesses told officers that they never heard gunshots but saw the shooting victim get out of the car before the Honda fled the scene.
The gunshot-victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries. Schools in the area were put on temporary lockdown as a precaution and police are investigating whether or not the shooting is gang related.
