Alki Arts 'bows out' gracefully downtown

After operating successfully in a location on Alki Beach, adjacent to the Cactus Restaurant for several years before Cassis and now the Maree Bistro took over the space, Alki Arts run by Diane Venti moved downtown, first to a spot near the Harbor Steps on the Seattle waterfront and then to 1124 1st Ave. where the gallery flourished.
Now, the gallery and event space has once again lost its lease and Venti shared the news via email to all her many friends.

Dear friends & fans of Alki Arts,

Dear Friends and Fans of Alki Arts-

What a great ride we have had! Three gallery locations & six years of showing the artwork of over 100 local artists and booking almost 150 musical acts!

Back in 2010 we hatched the 'big idea' to sub-lease prime commercial locations that were sitting empty in a 'down economy' so that we could showcase affordable, local, original art. The plan was perfect and we have in the process sold thousands of pieces of art and made so many wonderful friends.

Achilles heel ends Warrior boys' season

Article contributed by Gerardo Bolong

RENTON - The return of an old nemesis united with the meeting of a new challenge to deny the Seattle Christian boys basketball team a trip to the round of eight at the Yakima Sun Dome after a 67-59 state Hardwood Classic 1A regional loss to Southwest Washington District IV No. 3 Hoquiam on Sat., Feb. 27, on the court of Renton High School.

"Our Achilles heel bit back hard on us," said Seattle Christian head coach MIcheal Watts. "We got off to a slow start and had bad free throw shooting (9-of-19). The three-point shooting was only 4-of-29. We should have won this game."

Statistics showed 0-of-12 from beyond the arc in the first half.

Hoquiam (20-5) began the game with excellent and quick passing that surgically cut up the Seattle Christian defense for high percentage shots in the soft spot of the zone to clear away to an 8-0 lead. SC drew within 10-6, but struggled from the field as HHS pulled away to lead by 10 points on the way to a 20-12 difference after one quarter.

Kennedy beats Bellevue to open

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Kennedy Catholic bumped off No. 3-ranked Bellevue by a 77-68 score Thursday morning to open Class 3A state boys basketball tournament play in the Tacoma Dome and earn its way to Friday's semifinals.
The Lancers shot 27-for-50 from the field including 9-for-22 from 3-point range and made 14 of 19 free throws -- despite playing in a 9 a.m. game.

"I'm glad we liked it," said Kennedy head coach Don Hoffman of the early draw. "We shot the ball really well. The kids did the rotations that they had to."

Emilio Mancol led the way to victory for the Lancers, scoring 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field including 4-for-8 from 3-point range.

"He just plays the game with a ton of emotion," said Hoffman of Mancol. "All he does is play basketball. I like having that enthusiasm out there."

Simon Harris of Kennedy was also impressive from 3-point range, shooting 3-for-6 for his nine points off the bench.

"He's a streaky guy," said Hoffman of Harris. "He'll knock a few down."

Lorenzo brothers reclaim Paseo location on Seaview Avenue

Un Bien to open new location in spring

Ballard’s newest favorite Cuban sandwich restaurant, Un Bien, will be opening a second location in a very familiar and pink location at 6226 Seaview Ave. NW.

Come late spring, the former Paseo location near Golden Gardens will reopen as Un Bien said owners and brothers, Lucas and Julian Lorenzo.

The two are sons to Lorenzo Lorenzo, former owner and founder of Paseo. The two grew up making the Cuban dishes Seattlites have come to love. With the new opening, Golden Garden goers will once again can pick up a very similar and delicious favorite like the Caribbean Roasted Pork Sandwich at the pink shack.

The location has been vacant since Paseo closed in 2014 after a controversial bankruptcy and lawsuit. After Paseo closed the Lorenzo brothers ventured on their own and started Un Bien at the former burger shack at 7302 15th Ave. N.W. Much of the former Paseo staff followed them.
