Lancers narrowly miss state final

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Kennedy Catholic proved to be tough in the semifinals, coming within a heartbeat of a win and the state championship game.

The Lancers did sink what would have been the winning shot -- right after the final buzzer.

JFK had possession of the ball trailing O'Dea by a 61-60 score, and worked it to Keannu Royster through a frenzy.

Royster took a shot with time running out, only to have it partially blocked by O'Dea's Race Porter.

The deflected ball went to Matthew Sasonoff of the Lancers just to the right of the basket and he quickly popped it into the net.

But the shot was waved off by the nearest official as coming too late and it was the Fighting Irish who came away with the victory.

"We were one tenth of a second late or we would have won the game," said Kennedy head coach Don Hoffman. "The kids played hard. Both teams played their guts out."

O'Dea head coach Jason Kerr agreed.

"You had two teams out there battling," he said. "The Kennedy kids played their tails off. They kept coming at you. They never gave up."

Kennedy Catholic comes in fifth

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Kennedy Catholic finished fifth in the state Class 3A boys basketball tournament with a 92-64 loss to the Garfield Bulldogs in the third place game Saturday.

Garfield had been ranked No. 1 going into the tournament at the Tacoma Dome, while the Lancers were unranked but stunned Bellevue in their tournament opener and only loss to O'Dea by one point in the semifinals Friday.

"It was a great season," said Kennedy head coach Don Hoffman. "I'm proud of our players. I was pleased with our huge wins over Foss (in the West Central District tournament) and Shadle Park (in the state regionals). And getting Bellevue here, it just couldn't have been better."

The Lancers were a surprise to even make the final eight at the Tacoma Dome -- let alone finish fifth in the state -- after coming in sixth in the district tournament to take the final regional berth.

They had to travel to Spokane for regionals and face a No. 1 seed in Shadle Park, but won.

"That's the way high school basketball is," Hoffman said. "Anything can happen, especially with regionals since it's a one-game thing. You have to play well and take advantage."

You Are What You Eat: Salad in a jar!

By Katy Wilkens

Recently I was talking with a patient who has been trying unsuccessfully to lose weight so he can qualify for a kidney transplant. He stops by McDonald’s every morning for breakfast, picks up lunch at Taco Bell, and then has a “healthy dinner” at home—when he has time to cook. When I asked him why he was eating two-thirds of his meals out, he replied, “It’s fast!”

Fast it may be, but fast food is also high in sodium, fat, calories and cost. So this patient now has a new goal, to make his own fast food at home, cutting out all the dangerous salt and fat, and saving money and calories. Not to mention becoming healthy enough for transplant surgery.

To make it easy, he plans to prepare a week’s worth of lunches at a time. He’ll pack healthy salads in clear glass wide-mouth Mason jars from the thrift store. It’s an idea for anyone who wants a healthy, tasty meal without a wait.

Salad in a Jar:

Use a pint jar for one person’s side salad or quart jars for a salad entree or a picnic.

Eagles snag second-straight title

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Federal Way High School's Eagles snatched up their second-straight state Class 4A boys basketball title with a 66-54 victory over Kentwood on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles found themselves trailing by as much as eight at 15-7 in the first quarter and still trailed by seven at 25-18 in the second before closing the halftime margin to four at 29-25.

They were down by five at 35-30 with 4:10 to play in the third quarter before grabbing a 44-35 lead on a 14-point run.

Ferron Flavors started off the streak with a pair of free throws at 3:48 before D'jimon Jones buried a two point shot from the field to cut the margin to 35-34 at the 2:59 mark.

An ensuing steal led to a Kentwood foul and two free throws by Marcus Stephens at 2:47 for a sudden 36-35 Eagle led.

The Conquerors then missed at the other end and Jalen McDaniels made the rebound for Federal Way before Christian Jones scored on a pass underneath to make it 38-35 at 2:16.
