Barton Street P-Patch still growing strong 13 years on

The Barton Street P-Patch is a 12,000 square foot slice of heaven.

The dedicated P-Patchers have maintained it diligently since 2012 (the land was set aside the year before) and made it true community gem that is actively giving back.

June 17 saw them firing up their pizza oven, built in 2013, to cook bagels and pizza for a fundraiser to help maintain the space and get one corner of the garden made over.

One of the original P-Patchers, Kate Farley was on hand as were Chris Luthie and resident poet Kieth Brewer, who shared some of his haiku's and limericks.

Burien City Planning Commissioner Charles Schaefer removed; Wave of resignations follow in protest

Schaefer and Councilmember Moore accused of going too far in homeless relocation effort

During the Thursday night  Burien City Council special meeting City Planning Commissioner Charles Schaefer was removed from the job. That prompted a series of  five planning commssioner resignations in protest on Friday. Then came resignations from an airport commissioner, a parks board members, and an arts commissioner.

Schaefer and Burien City Councilmember Cydney Moore were accused of golng too far when they assisted in moving homeless people to a land at the corner of 6th Avenue SW and SW 152nd Street.

King County has a record on offer to pay $1 million in addition to 35 pallet shelters all at zero cost to the City of Burien,. They would  reclaim a piece of city-owned land currently being leased to Toyota of Burien.

That move does not sit well with the car dealership. The owner Dean Anderson noted that his business might drop by as much as 30% to 35%, which would also force him to cut staff.

Tulips Nail Salon at Jefferson Square latest smash and grab victim

Tulips Nails at Jefferson Square was the victim of a smash and grab robbery early Friday morning around 5am. A car rammed their store front, completely shattering the front door and window.

According to a friend of the owner Kesa Sten "they are in good spirits and still open today, even with nothing fixed yet! If you aren’t loyal to any particular salon or this is your salon of choice, they could use some love and support from their community."

Sten said they  'stole cash, checks, and their huge Buddha statue- would probably take 3 people to lift and carry, she said it was extremely heavy."

The salon was already struggling due to a car that smashed into the AT&T store next door, damaging their business too. That incident was apparently accidental however.

HERBOLD: Racing zone proposal

Information from District 1 City Councilmember Lisa Herbold

For several years, as District 1 Councilmember, I have heard from West Seattle residents about dangerous car drag racing along Alki Avenue SW, Harbor Avenue SW, and West Marginal Way SW. The sounds of cars drag racing is regularly audible during evenings in Delridge, far up the hill from West Marginal Way.

I’ve discussed drag racing regularly over the years with our SW Precinct Captains.  Drag racers move from place to place in the region, and don’t stay long, making it difficult for officers to safely enforce speeding laws.  Police high-speed chases of racing vehicles are regulated by SPD policy.

Ken's View: Billy Boy

By Ken Robinson

Managing Editor

A girl who lived across the highway had a horse. I saw her once in a while and riding the edge of the road. That must have been what made me want my own horse. I was 14 and wanted to meet that girl.

In that adolescent blur that impels us as we grow from child to teenager, some selfish force led me. It all seemed to happen at a trot.

Our neighborhood still had the remnants of a city-farm look. One place had chickens roaming. In the swale at the base of the hill, another family had a worn-out old nag in a make-shift structure. They had a crude barn where they stomped grapes for wine. They offered us a water glass full when we would visit.

On our side of the highway, there was a father-less family of five.  That Spring, the absent father sent the oldest child, Monty a golden palomino mare from his home in Arizona.
