King County first in the nation to order new hybrid fire truck

Information from King County

King County International Airport-Boeing Field (KCIA) will be the first airport in the nation to receive a Striker Volterra 6x6 Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) hybrid electric fire engine after finalizing purchase details yesterday with Oshkosh Airport Products, a division of Pierce Manufacturing Inc. The new rig complements the airport's existing diesel-powered firefighting vehicles also made by Oshkosh Airport Products and will allow the airport to retire its oldest diesel fire truck.

“Climate change is an urgent global crisis that requires us all to do our part, in ways large and small, to shrink our carbon footprint,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine. “We are operating a major international airport, and this first-of-its-kind hybrid fire truck is another way we are leading the way on reducing both carbon emissions and the harms to communities most impacted by ambient pollution.”

Multi-agency plan now in motion to address unhoused living in greenbelt

Campers east of Myers Way South will be the focus of a new effort

The Highland Park Action Committee shared information regarding the growing presence of unhoused people in the greenbelt across from Camp Second Chance on Myers Way SW.

We have also recently heard from WSDOT folks regarding the concerning uptick of campers and litter in the Meyers Way greenbelt east of Camp Second Chance. They have asked us to share out this message:

Dear Arrowhead Gardens Senior Living community and Myers Way neighbors,

I want to share with you information and next steps as it relates to the encampments on Myers Way. The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT), Washington State Patrol, King County Regional Homeless Authority and the City of Seattle collectively agree that this site is our top multijurisdictional site to address. Operational teams are coordinating a site resolution plan.

With the plans in place and the hurdles cleared for the tear down and remodel of Alki Elementary School the time has come to say goodbye. A letter was sent out to the community announcing an open house on June 21 from 4 to 6pm

Alki Elementary School, a historic institution that has been a cornerstone of the West Seattle community since its construction in 1900, will soon bid farewell to its beloved building. In August of this year, the school is set to be torn down to make way for a brand-new facility, ensuring a modern and innovative learning environment for future generations.

Before bidding adieu to its rich past, Alki Elementary School is inviting the public to a special Community Open House on June 21, 2023, from 4 pm to 6 pm. This free event offers an opportunity for community members, alumni, and anyone with fond memories of the school to step inside and reminisce about the cherished moments shared within those walls.

Crystals and stones now on the menu at Great American Diner

Adding retail offerings to a restaurant normally means T-Shirts or other swag but at the Great American Diner in the West Seattle Junction, owner Glen Quadros sees things a little differently.

"I'm always looking for ways to make the experience here better or more fun," Quadros said, "That's why we introduced live music, comedy nights, a pretty amazing happy hour and more."

Now available at the restaurant are polished stones, crystals, bracelets, obelisks, and geodes.

"We kept the prices very reasonable because we wanted to make these items a nice addition to a meal, but we're just as happy to offer them to shoppers."

The prices range from $6 for some stones to $8 to $20 for bracelets of Ammonite, Obsidian, Smokey Quartz, Rose Quartz, Tiger eye, Pink Opal, Amethyst, Multicolor Tourmaline, and Malachiite. Also available are quartz tower points, all the way up to Amethyst Geodes for several hundred dollars.
