Pat's View: The future faster

By Patrick Robinson

If it seems as if things are moving faster, that’s no illusion. Certainly as we age and the repetition of experiences layers upon memories, it can feel that way. But in fact the pace of change is increasing, led for both good and bad by technology.

In a recent paper written by a former employee of Artificial Intelligence leader Open AI, the suggestion was made that it is not unlikely we will reach what is called Artificial General Intelligence within the next three years.

The implications of that achievement are staggering.

According to the McKinsey report, AI is expected to replace 2.4 million US jobs by 2030, with an additional 12 million occupational shifts.Researchers estimate that anywhere from 9% to 47% of jobs could be automated in the future

Yet we are not now preparing young people for these swiftly oncoming changes.

Mary Fields 'Carried Away' is a graphic novel that illustrates adventure

Autobiographical memoir recounts the author's travels in 1974

Mary Fields is an artist who seems to have found multiple ways to challenge herself in life and her first graphic novel Carried Away is evidence of that fact. Fields, whose profession is as muralist took a trip in 1974 with very little money and not much of a plan. In fact in the many places she travelled she knew no one, and had no idea where she would stay.

She documents her adventure in the 184 page memoir with her own writing and illustrations. On June 23, she gave a presentation and did a book signing at C&P Coffeehouse. In her often humorous and revealing comments about her journey and the later retelling in a format completely new to her she spoke about having to learn nearly everything from scratch.

Seatttle City Councilmember Rob Saka issued a statement regarding the shooting that took place in West Seattle in the early morning hours of Saturday June 22.

"I am shocked, dismayed and frustrated over the shooting death on Alki’s Harbor Avenue SW early this morning. I offer my condolences to the victim’s family.

This is the second one in my District since 15-year-old Mobarack Adam was killed and our larger community also lost another young person recently at Garfield High.

I visited the crime scene this morning and spoke directly with responding officers and firefighters to offer my support and expressed appreciation for their work. I also personally spoke with one of the residents who got their window shot at.

I have been in touch with two Seattle Deputy Mayors to express my frustration and request collaboration.
