West Seattle light rail opponents invite you to "Walk the Route" June 9

Members of the group Rethinkthelink.org, who oppose the implementation as thus far devised of Sound Transit's link light rail West Seattle extension invite you to "Walk the Route" on June 9.

In emails to WestsideSeattle members of the group confirm that King County Executive Dow Constantine reached out to the Sound Transit Board, which he heads requesting a community forum regarding their preferred path for the rail line. The final Environmental Impact Statement is due in the next few weeks.

While not opposed to light rail as a means of mass transit the group has specific objections to what they say are the impacts the current plan will have.

The tour is scheduled to start Sunday, June 9 at 10am in the West Seattle Health Club parking lot at 2629 SW Andover Street.

You can walk with a group or take the tour self guided.

LETTER: I applaud SDOT's Healthy Streets on Alki Point

Dear Editor,

I think the group Alki for All needs to change their name...because they don't speak for me. They should be called 'Alki for Some'...

I have lived at Alki Point for decades...I LOVE what SDOT is doing!! It is making our street safe and livable. I am so tired of the racing, loud engines, rude drivers, almost 'misses', etc.

I applaud everything SDOT is doing, and so are my neighbors.  We can't wait until it is finished and hopefully traffic is going in 'one' direction and safe for all.

Pat's View: Random childhood memories

By Patrick Robinson

Since I’m now old I can share childhood memories that, because of how life goes, will resonate with a decreasing number of people but perhaps that’s why they are worth sharing.

When I attended Hazel Valley Elementary School in the late 1950’s I would walk home from school and often stop at the Carter gas station on 126th SW. and head for the pop machine. It was a “slider” type cooler that kept the bottles in cold water, in a dispenser you had to slide your glass bottle through to a little gate to get out. WOW was it cold. I believe that sensation of drinking genuinely ice cold coca cola from a glass bottle is what built that company’s universal sense memory. Once you had that experience you wanted it again.

We do it for the love of lush, inviting spaces, but that's not the only reason. Our little all-volunteer organization donates the net proceeds, about $25,000 each year, to other nonprofits whose goals fit our mission—to promote horticulture, education and artistic endeavors within West Seattle and neighboring communities

Flood Watch in effect starting Sunday morning

While local streams like Longfellow Creek in West Seattle and the Duwamish River are less likely to flood in a serious way, outlying rivers and streams are worth keeping an eye on in the wake of a Flood Watch issued by the National Weather Service beginning Sunday. Heavy rains are set to start Sunday night.

Information from National Weather Service

Two atmospheric rivers are expected to arrive Sunday through Tuesday. Heavy rain is expected Sunday night into Monday morning with additional rainfall through Tuesday. Snow levels will be high. This combination could push rivers in the watch area close to flood stage beginning Monday.

FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING...
