How to vote your conscience

The term, "voting your conscience" is often bandied about by individuals who want to garner support for a particular political candidate, suggesting that, in the face of confusing choices one should follow their heart.

To some this can mean not voting at all, and I used to think this was a good idea, especially considering that my votes in the last two elections didn't seem to do any good.

Assault leaves man unconscious; witnesses not helpful to police

1. Federal Way police followed up with a 911 call that indicated an assault had occurred early in the morning, around 2:00 a.m., on November 18. The incident involved a victim driver of a tan 1995 Acura and an unnamed suspect. The suspect was allegedly driving a black 2003 Volkswagen. According to the report, the altercation took place at a business located on the 33000 block of Pacific Highway South. Officers responded to the dispute between what they were told was a group of three to four males.

Zoolights Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Zoolights is open at the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma and runs through Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008.

The glittering light display depicts local landmarks, including Mount Rainer and both Tacoma

Judge's ruling in the Camp Kilworth sale challenged

The William Kilworth Trust and the Florence Kilworth Trust today appealed a September 26 ruling by Pierce County Superior Court Judge Thomas P. Larkin that gave the go-ahead to the Pacific Harbors Council of the Boy Scouts of America to sell a Scout property called Camp Kilworth to the City of Federal Way.

City and Scout staff will now work on modifying the existing purchase and sale agreement for the property, which calls for the title to clear by the end of this year. A modified agreement may be brought to Council in December.

Arthur Butherus

Passed away November 16, 2007, at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his son Curtis on October 31, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Fay; and daughters Dian (Kent), Judy (Tom) and Sharon; grandsons Brian (Natalie), John (Audra), Ryan; granddaughters Michele (Ken), Jennifer (Gary), Jacquelyn (Antar), Justina (Chad); and 13 great-grandchildren.

Arthur, the son of Conrad and Magdalena Butherus, was born and raised in Walla Walla, Washington. He was one of 10 children, four brothers and five sisters.

Jack Henry Caldwell

Our dearly loved husband, dad, grandpa and brother passed on after a struggle with Parkinson's disease. He passed away peacefully at age 79 Saturday, November 17, 2007, at his home in Des Moines. He was born on January 9, 1928, in Portland, Oregon, to Edward William and Eleanor Magdaline Caldwell. Jack was raised the fourth of four sons. He graduated from Beaverton High School in 1946. After high school Jack enlisted in the U.S.

Charles David Kaeser, 60, entered into rest on Monday, October 29, 2007. He was born on April 7, 1947, in Orange County, California to Mr. Charles Edward and Mrs. Dorothy Kaeser.

Duane W. Shield

6/28/1931-11/15/2007

Duane "Lefty" Shield was a long-time resident of the Burien area where he owned and operated Burien Mortgage and Escrow for 35 years. He had recently moved back to the Seattle area after retiring in Arizona for the past 11 years. Lefty passed away after a short battle with cancer.

He is survived by his daughters Julie (Jimmy) Rice and Laura (Jeff) Macaluso, granddaughter Jade and grandsons Beau, Max and Cameron.

Margaret Louise Waldo_

Was born on June 9, 1927 in Maryland Heights, Mo., and passed away November 19, 2007 at Providence Colby Campus Hospital in Everett. She was preceded in death by husband Russ Waldo (1993); son Roy Waldo (1984); and son-in-law Alan Harju (2006).

She had a very large family, which included: William (Chelle); Claire (Chuck); Richard (Marcy); Marilyn (Alan deceased); Roy (deceased); Delores (Danny); Carol and Floyd (Stephanie); and Stepson Michael (Kathy).

She had lots of nieces and nephews along with grand and great grandchildren.
