Nothing like an Igloo to make friends stick together

The real estate market has turned as cold as the weather around the country, but in Federal Way an enterprising group of college kids found the time and inclination to build an igloo. With rudimentary knowledge; mostly from pictures they'd seen, these young people set about to create their northwest version. Starting with a blanket of snow in their front yard, the system involved

stuffing recycle bins with plenty of hard packed snow one shovel at a time. For several hours they toiled, sloping the blocks ever so slightly inward on each row.

D.M. commuter plan updated

The Des Moines City Council has updated its Commute Trip Reduction Plan to reduce local air pollution, traffic congestion and energy consumption, as required by state law.

This plan, mandated in 1991 under Washington's Clean Air Act, requires large employers in the city to implement programs that reduce both drive-alone commuter trips and the number of vehicle miles traveled by employees on those trips.

Currently, Des Moines has two work sites that are required to have commute trip reduction plans for employees - Highline Community College and City Hall.

Be pet savvy this Christmas

Christmas and Hanukah are meant to be a time of peace and joy, but it can be a stressful time for both people and their pets.

It is a sad fact that dogs and cats become sick, and even die, due to some of the changes that happen in their environment during the holidays. However, with a little extra thought and a few precautionary tips, pet owners can ensure their pet will enjoy the season.

It is important to understand that pets are curious about anything new in their surroundings.

Hoff is right on the mark

Of the articles I've read by Charlie Hoff in your newspaper, I'd have to say that he is absolutely right on the mark.

As a School Board Director in Shoreline I appreciate his insights, even if they make some people uncomfortable. I have met Charlie in person twice and I am amazed at his depth of knowledge, his well reasoned ideas, and his obvious strong personal drive to improve the education of our children.

I only wish he was a fellow Board member in Shoreline.
