Popular Arbor Heights principal Dr. Carol Coram talks about move to Denny

Popular Arbor Heights Elementary School principal Dr. Carol Coram leaves her position this summer after 11 years to become assistant principal at Denny International Middle School. Denny has two assistant principals, Kristina Bellamy-McClain, who becomes interim principal at Emerson Elementary School, and Chanda Oatis, who will stay on.

"I was ready to do something different," Coram told the West Seattle Herald. "This will be a new opportunity with new challenges. That's what it's all about. I thought long before there was this (job) opening that if I was going to ever make a change, that this would be a tough decision to do, and that I still would want to be in West Seattle. So when I saw this opening, I said, 'Oh, this is a possibility.'

"I'm not sure how everything will be divided up regarding specific responsibilities," she said. "I haven't had those conversations yet with (Denny principal) Jeff Clark. But I look forward to working in the new building in September.

SLIDESHOW: Alki Summer Streets and Car Free Day was a neighborhood party

Booths, bands and fun get Summer an early start

The Alki Summer Streets and Car Free Day really began with crack of the starter's pistol at 9:30 am for the annual West Seattle 5k where an estimated 1400 runners and walkers shook off the winter cobwebs and filled Alki Avenue.

After the race the booths began to sprout along the Avenue with vendors and others providing information, entertainment, and lots of opportunities for fun.

The music began at 12 Noon and continued through the afternoon.

Event organizer Sandy Payne, now Secretary for the Alki Community Council, primary sponsors for the event said," It's been a huge challenge. It was late notice and we were originally going to do something in July and SDOT asked us to be a part of this event so we moved up our plans 2 months. We've been running around recruiting like crazy."

She was happy about the rain free weather and the high attendance which was estimated in the thousands.

Friends of Jeremy Peck holding special car wash at Alki Homestead

Softball team named in his honor will wash and detail your car near Alki May 22

A very special car wash is being held by a softball team named after Jeremy Peck, this Sunday, May 22 in the parking lot of the Alki Homestead just 1/3 of a block off the beach at 2717 61st Ave. s.w.

Peck disappeared last December and his body was found on Bainbridge Island three weeks later. An investigation into his death is continuing.

The Jpeezy's are sponsored by The Bridge restaurant and lounge and they play in the Men's Metro League for West Seattle. The League has twenty teams. They normally play at Riverview Playfield.

A $20 donation gets you a car wash, a mini-detail, and a parking spot for Car Free Sunday, which is happening at the same time.

Jeremy's uncle, John Peck expressed his gratitude to The Bridge owners Rita Dixson and Trevor Garand. "They were instrumental in our ability to get a team going this year. We owe them a lot," he said.

The main goal in fielding a team is to keep Jeremy Peck's name alive. Friend and player Ben Doty said, "That's what brings us together and unites the team."

The car wash will run from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm or until the lot fills up with cars.
