West Seattle Transit Coalition is forming

West Seattle residents concerned about the future of transit in and out of West Seattle are joining forces to create a unified voice and to get answers from elected officials on where they stand when it comes to congestion, public transportation, construction, and the like.

The coalition was formally announced by the Westwood/Roxhill/Arbor Heights Community Council (WWRHAH) on Sept. 12. The group’s first meeting is scheduled for Sept. 24, 6:30 p.m., at the High Point Neighborhood House (6400 Sylvan Way S.W.).

According to WWRHAH, the coalition will focus on at least three main concerns:

1. The looming reduction of mass transit services region wide with the King County Metro funding crisis coming out of Olympia. All services will face up to a 17% cut in volume.
2. This is only compounded for us in West Seattle, with the equally looming end of the SR-99 Viaduct and the construction headaches that will cause for all of us soon.

Franciscan Medical Clinic coming to Westwood Village

Roxbury Clinic will close to open new location

Marking a sea change in mission, what once was a liquor store will now become a medical clinic.

The Franciscan Health System is planning to open “Franciscan Medical Clinic Westwood” at 2511 S.W. Trenton St. in the Westwood Village shopping center, with tentative plans to open late this year.

Franciscan is the new name of clinics formerly known under the Highline Medical Group name, as the two forged an alliance in April of 2013. They also operate a primary/prompt care facility in the Fauntleroy Triangle.

The new location is located between Staples and Massage Envy at Westwood (the former home of both state and private liquor stores), and Franciscan Regional Administrator Vickie Jimenez said they will be closing the Roxbury Clinic (9635 17th Ave. S.W.) once the new space is ready for patients. Providers currently operating at Roxbury will be moving to Westwood.

Jimenez said Howard S. Wright Construction is already working on the new space that will include 14 exam rooms and a configuration that may allow them to bring in additional patient services, although no decisions have been made on that yet.

Reader crime report: Beware the beat up green Cadillac

West Seattle Herald reader Cyndi wrote in on the evening of Sept. 13 to report a theft from her front porch.

"We live in S. West Seattle and shortly after a package was delivered, a guy came up on the porch and took the package. My husband went after him and tried to stop him but he jumped into a late model beat up green Cadillac.

"It's very distinctive, upon having the conversation with my husband I had seen the same car in the Roxbury Safeway parking lot.

"The trunk is held closed by a chain looped through and fastened by two padlocks. If anybody has or does see this car, if they could get the license plate number so it can be given to the police. We reported the theft."

As a humorous side note, Cyndi shared, "My husband does mobile RV repairs and the package contained a toilet seat for an RV!"

We're sure that toilet seat will come in handy.

Slideshow: Beavers crushed in season opener

Ballard High School had a disappointing season opener against crosstown rival, Bishop Blanchet, last week. The Blanchet Braves steamrolled the Beavers in a 43-0 loss. While the defense tried their best to hold off the Braves, letting through a few of big plays but otherwise holding their own, the offense couldn’t muster enough energy to break through for a touchdown. Punts and penalties were all too common in the Beavers’ first game, which took place at the highly energetic Blanchet homebase.

Luckily for the Beavers, this game didn’t count in the league standings, instead just offering a harsh lesson on how much they need to improve. The Beavers will be taking on the O’Dea High School Fighting Irish in a nonleague game today, Friday, Sept. 13, 7:45 p.m. at Memorial Stadium (401 5th Ave N). While it’s sure to be a challenging game, what else can we say but: “Go Beavers!”

Ballard Crime Watch: Store mischief leads to scuffle in Crown Hill; trespasser scares girls

Store mischief leads to scuffle outside

Sept. 6, 7:30 p.m., 9900 Block of Holman Rd NW -- A fight broke out two white men and a group of six black males after the group of six caused a scene at a store.

The group of men, approximately 20 years old, knocked over items, got in a verbal fight with store staff, told an elderly woman "get out of the way you old bitch" and knocked down a fire extinguisher on the way out.

Once the group left, store staff called police and watched as the two other customers followed the group outside.

The two men didn't take kindly to the group's in-store rambunctiousness and decided to confront them. The two groups eventually took the confrontation to a park across the street. One of the men from the group took a rock and attempted to hit one of the two men, striking and dislocating one of his fingers.

Losing the fight, the two men attempted to escape back to the store. The group pushed and shoved them along the way.
