Legacy Fundraising luncheon at the Mount will feature brilliant photos from David McLain

information from Providence Mt. St. Vincent

Award-winning National Geographic photographer David McLain will share stunning images and profound stories of elders from around the world at the Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation's 11th Annual Legacy Fundraising Luncheon on Oct. 3, 2013, in Seattle.

As witnessed while photographing the National Geographic cover story, "The Secrets of Living Longer," McLain will show, via a multi-media presentation, elders who are living vibrant, passionate and long lives and the profound effect of embracing one's Ikigai, or "reason for being" as it relates to longevity, fulfillment and happiness.

This year's luncheon theme is "Finding Your Ikigai--Discover Your Reason for Being No Matter Your Age" and McLain's presentation fits with Providence Mount St. Vincent's mission to offer older adults a loving home in its assisted living and skilled nursing facility as they age and continue toward the end of their life's journey.

West Seattle Time Bank keeps growing; Next meeting is Sept. 25

The West Seattle Time Bank, an idea in which you exchange your own time for that of others for needed services or help is continuing to grow and gain popularity.

The next WSTB Orientation Meeting is : Wed., September 25, 2013 a the WS Senior Center - 4217 SW Oregon St.
6:30-7:00pm potluck/social time
7:00-8:00pm Orientation or member meeting

Chair of the WSTB Tamsen Spengler said, "At the members meeting we meet each other, have existing members assist new members with posting their services and setting-up their accounts. At the August meeting new members said they really appreciated the support and felt so welcomed. Seeing the membership grow convinces me this is a program our neighborhoods are embracing because a feeling of "community" is needed again and esp. during this difficult economic time."

The exchanges can be diverse or direct.

After the first meeting a new service exchange was setup, "goat milking" for teaching "how to make cheese".

SLIDESHOW: 75 was a great birthday for the 'Log Cabin' Fieldhouse in White Center

The 75th birthday of the historic White Center Fieldhouse was celebrated Sept. 14 with a community gathering featuring games, activities, performances, memories and a special anniversary cake.

In addition to highlighting the unique histories of the building and park, the celebration offered games, arts and crafts, cake and performances by special guests.

The fieldhouse, which is also known as the White Center Community Center, or the Log Cabin, was constructed between 1938 to 1940 and is one of the five original Works Progress Administration fieldhouses in King County.

Designed in the National Park Service “rustic style,” the fieldhouse features gabled wood shingle roofs, large covered porches with oversized log support posts, stone fireplaces, and half-log sliding. The building is a designated King County Landmark.

Community members are encouraged to share their memories of the White Center Fieldhouse with others by participating in the virtual scrapbook and video that King County Parks will assemble and make available to the public.

Boat fire in South Park was contained to single craft; No injuries or other damage

A 30 foot pleasure craft, moored at the end of a dock in the South Park Marina was completely destroyed by fire overnight. South Park's Engine 26 was the first to arrive and had a difficult time getting to the boat due to the width of the dock.

There were no injuries reported and no one was on board the craft. The boat was called the Wild Goose, out of Craig, Alaska.

There were also other crews from Seattle, North Highline and Tukwila leading to a jurisdictional question, finally resulting in Tukwila Fire handling the case.

No cause for the fire was announced.

SLIDESHOW: Cleveland Eagles take down Sealth Seahawks in game of give and take

By Paul Moseley

The Chief Sealth Seahawks hosted the Cleveland high Eagles in a Metro-Sound football match-up friday night. Both teams were looking for their first win of the season, and they both came with an aggressive offensive plan that produced big plays all night long.

Sealth got the opening kick off and went to work quickly. They set the table with a couple of runs then unleashed a 54 yard TD pass from QB WESTON REED to wide receiver LEEANDRE DICKERSON going up 7-0 with less than 2 minutes gone in the game.

The two teams settled in and battled back and forth for much of the first quarter, with Cleveland making it to the Sealth red zone four times in the first quarter.

On their first trip, Cleveland got a break on a quick kick and started on their own 31. A long reception by the Eagle's Dale Daniels got them down to the Sealth 21 yard line and a chance to tie. Cleveland went to the air in the red zone and Sealth's CZAI TERRELL grabbed his first interception of the night at the 13 yard line, returning it to the 47.

SLIDESHOW: West Seattle loses big to Seattle Prep 50 -13

By Jeremy Martin

Following a difficult week 1 loss at the hands of Fife, West Seattle High School returned to familiar surroundings with the hopes of picking up its first win of the 2013 season during a Friday night tilt with Metro League foe Seattle Prep.

But despite playing close to home at West Seattle Stadium, the young Wildcat squad had no answer for a Seattle Prep Panther rushing attack that featured a heavy dose of end around options and designed quarterback runs.

The 50-13 loss came as another reminder of where progress needs to be made for a Wildcat (0-2) team which only suites three seniors.

“There is a lot of people who haven’t played football out there on the field; it’s a building thing,” West Seattle High head coach Tom Burggraff said. “We want to learn from our mistakes and find the positives, find the individual efforts and celebrate them.”

SSCC’s 13th Year Scholarships open doors to great unknown

In an age of ever-rising tuition costs, college is becoming a distant dream for many teens and their parents who simply cannot afford the bill.

Starting in 2008, the South Seattle Community College Foundation has been bucking that trend of fiscal impossibility with their 13th Year Promise Scholarship that currently offers graduating seniors (that’s ALL graduating seniors) of Cleveland and Chief Sealth International High Schools one year of free tuition at South.

The only catch: They just have to apply for the scholarship and school on time.

The program, funded through a combination of financial aid and donor contributions, started with Cleveland students in 2008 and expanded to Sealth in 2011. According to SSCC President Gary Oertli, the Foundation hopes to grow the 13th year fund and eventually expand into Rainier Beach and West Seattle High Schools.

This year, 100 students took advantage of the 13th Year Scholarship (their largest class to date) and on Sept. 23 they will start their first days of college. For many, including Sealth graduate Joe Thayer, this is a family first.
