New homes going in at Greenbridge

King County Housing Authority and Homesight announced groundbreaking for eight new homes at the Greenbridge mixed-income housing community located on 8th Ave. S.W. in White Center.

According to Rhonda Rosenberg with KCHA, "The Homesight homes are intended to be affordable to families earning at or below 80 percent of the King County median income of $64,400 for a family of four."

Rosenberg said the homes are being built as a partnership between the housing authority and Homesight, "a community-based real estate developer and mortgage lender that works with first-time homebuyers."

Help with loans is being offered from multiple sources for homes ranging from three-bedroom, 2.25 baths starting at $265,000 to four-bedroom, 2.5 baths starting at $285,000, according to KCHA.

Presales are happening now and the homes are expected to be complete in April of 2014. For more details contact HomeSight at 206-723-4355 or www.homesightwa.org.

Listen to your father: An excerpt

The following is an excerpt from a published book:

Listen To Your Father

After my dad died in Portland, in 1963, I went down to his musty basement, switched on a light to see a long bench covered with scores of boxes. I decided to go through every one. At some point I just poked my hand into a file in the middle of one box. It was the only piece of paper out of the entire collection addressed to me and never sent.

A letter to Gerald:

Son--the gifts of the gods are scattered for those who will.
Only the man who struggles attains the highest hill --
And strength must come thru effort -- I'll try, I'll try, I'll try has won life's greatest battles -- when the spirit says do or die.
And the gods of vision will whisper in an hour of despair
look up and on and forward for I am the One to care.
And a boy with hope and real worth is the pride, the joy,
the Best of Earth.

Those words by my dad in his Spenserian scrawl are framed and and hanging on my study wall.

Take Two #99: Party Like an American

By Kyra-lin Hom

If all that foreigners knew of America was our pop music, they’d think our entire national existence revolved around “da club.” Turn on your radio, channel spaz between the top stations and you’ll get my drift (exceptions aside of course). Based on our mainstream musical choices, all we care about is “where ‘da party at” – not my words, the words of a homeless refugee fleeing the genocide in his home country.

Living on the streets of Seattle, he’s facing nothing but continued homelessness, disease and deportation if our immigration laws are not reformed. I can see why he might be a tad bit bitter...I don’t get this clubbing obsession, and I like clubs – unlike a number ofmy friends. I like dancing; I like having to yell over music; and I like... Okay so I don’t like strange Bollywood/Kesha remixes, but I do like laughing with friends over the random MC Hammer musical cameos.

At Large in Ballard: The Writer Next Door

Mark your calendar: Ballard Writers 'Big Event' on Nov. 1

By Peggy Sturdivant

You know those stressful dreams in which you are on your way to some important event and realize you’ve forgotten 1) wallet, 2) clothes, or 3) how to drive? Fill in your own nightmare. I just had mine this morning. After last November’s Big Event for Ballard Writers the Sunset Hill Community Association suggested that we set a date for the following year. It’s Friday, November 1. But I forgot to invite anyone.

We’ve had the date for a year. Ballard Writers Collective has been planning the event for months. But did I send out Save the Date cards? Give timely notice to the Seattle Times calendar? No. Sure, the other 100+ members of Ballard Writers know about Friday’s 4th Annual but it’s supposed to be for the public, not for us.

Then again, who are we? We are your neighbors. If there’s anything I’ve learned since the 2010 launch of Ballard Writers is that we are legion. It’s the woman next to me at yoga and the man who walks past my house with his dog. Either everyone has a story to tell or they have already been trying to write it, publish it, sell it, get it accepted by Modern Love in the New York Times Styles section.

Hit and run accident yesterday

A Ballard News-Tribune reader witnessed a hit and run accident yesterday on 14th Ave NW, between NW 45th and 46th streets. She said it "looked pretty serious" -- airbags were deployed and both cars were mangled. She said that the driver and passenger in the silver car apparently ran away from the scene.
