Police Blotter Week of 10-28-13

One dangerous home
It was early afternoon on Oct. 17 when a man living on 12th Ave. S.W. saw two people snooping around a neighbor’s dilapidated home that had been vacant for a year after the owner passed away. Knowing the deceased owner’s daughter, the witness called her and asked if anyone should be at the house. Nope. And furthermore, she said, the house needed a lot of work done before it could be rented or sold, including decontamination since the home had allegedly been used for drug production and trafficking by a “local motorcycle club,” leaving a toxic mess behind. The witness walked outside and took a photo of the suspicious characters’ vehicle license plate and called police, but by the time they arrived the suspects were gone. Upon further investigation, police learned someone had attempted to burn the house down shortly after the owner passed away. “It is not known if this incident was a scouting job for arson attempt,” the police report said. Police took the vehicle photos back to Southwest Precinct burglary detectives.

Stoup Brewing combines science with beer

By Shane Harms

A throng of thirsty patrons arrived Wednesday Oct. 23 ready to taste and celebrate the opening of Ballard’s ninth brewery, Stoup Brewing (1108 NW 52nd St).

Owners, brewer Robyn Schumacher, PR person Lara Zahaba and head brewer Brad Benson poured beer and chatted with patrons as more and more of Seattle’s beer enthusiasts arrived.

“I’m from the Northwest but all my brewing experience is on the east coast. I followed my now wife to New York and she got a job in the wine industry, and so I brewed in Manhattan and New Jersey,” Benson said.

The start for Stoup began when Benson and Zahaba (married) were looking for a change in careers, and they considered brewing

“I worked as a professional brewer for about six years, and then I got out of it about a decade ago and went back to my regular career as an environmental chemist. I wasn’t enjoying that too much, so my wife and I were talking about what we should do next and she kind of elbowed me a bit and said, ‘Why don’t we do a brewery?’” Benson said.

SLIDESHOW: Harvest Festival was soggy but sweet

The annual West Seattle Harvest Festival got a soggy start under a steady mist but by the time the kid's costume parade rolled around at 11:30am the weather had cleared a bit so all the little ones could take part.

Thousands came to the Junction to take the kids trick or treating at area merchants and enjoy the dozens of booths from the relocated farmers market (normally behind the junction on Sundays) and many others.

The costumes on display were remarkable anyone's estimation from the usual prepackaged version of skeletons and cartoon characters from mutant turtles to Minions to home made versions of heroes, or even more creative efforts. A mother and daughter even dressed up as a car hop and a hot fudge sundae.

The event also offered a chili cook off between area restaurants including:

  • The Bridge
  • Beer Junction
  • Easy Street Café
  • Elliott Bay Brewery
  • Feedback Lounge
  • Husky Deli
  • Terra Cole Butchery
  • West 5

SLIDESHOW: Seattle Lutheran stomps Chief Leschi for their 2013 Homecoming game

By Paul Moseley

The 2-4 Seattle Lutheran Saints had a happy homecoming as they took on the winless Chief Leschi Warriors at West Seattle Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Hampered with injuries throughout the season, the Saints put a strong team on the field. The Saints attacked from the opening kick-off, and it was #32 Abijah Smith who answered the first call. Smith, who was out earlier this season due to a bell ringing head-to-head tackle in game 1, was back in full form. Taking the ball on the first 3 plays from scrimmage, Smith took the Saints 60 yards and put them on the board in the first minute of the game and had his first of his 3 TD's in the game.

One possession later, the Saints #5 Grant Doerr got the call as QB Cody Jones connected with him on a pass for Doerr's first of two TD's to put Seattle Lutheran up 14-0.

The Warriors came with an unorthodox game plan, faking almost every punt. At 5:40 in the first, Seattle Lutheran #4 JJ Young intercepted a pass off a fake punt and scored, making it 20-0.

SLIDESHOW: Sealth cruises to a 28-6 victory over Ingraham Rams

By Jeremy Martin

There was a lot on the line Friday night when Chief Sealth bussed North to take on Ingraham in the final regular season game of 2013.

One week after an exciting Huling Bowl victory over West Seattle, the Seahawks hoped to build momentum heading into the playoffs by dismantling a Rams squad celebrating both homecoming and senior night.

Though Ingraham had several generations of fans in attendance, it was Chief Sealth and the unforgettable first quarter of its junior tailback Daron Comacho that won the day, giving the Seahawks a 28-6 win.

Having already scored one first quarter touchdown, on a ten yard run off tackle, Comacho than showed off his special teams talents by picking up another first quarter score when a blocked Ram’s field goal attempt bounced into his hands and the sophomore was able to follow a series of key blocks en route to a 90 yard, crowd silencing score.

Comacho finished the game with 108 total yards while also managing an offensive fumble recovery that helped the Seahawks (4-4) extend a drive deep into Ram territory.
